Does it have to be in Chinatown? Because if not, Royal China on Baker Street is, IMO, the place for dim sum...

Oh, am hungry now

moomina · 28/08/2004 10:41

Meant to say, you have to get there early because of the queues...

hazlinh · 28/08/2004 12:05

yeah twigglett, does it have to be chinatown?? there's a great place in whiteley's, bayswater. I think it's called poon's tho I could be wrong.

there's also another place in bayswater, er, can't remember the name, er, it's a red-ish coloured place, quite big, takes up two lots i think, on the way to whiteley's from the queensway tube station, it's next to boot's perhaps.
oh god. i'll stop babbling now

But those two are VERY good for dim sum.Used to make it a weekly ritual...haven't been to London in more than a year now...

got this one from the time out website just now

Royal Dragon
30 Gerrard St

"An unassuming restaurant serving some of the area?s finest dim sum. Steamed chive dumplings and sautéd turnip paste were impeccable, and we adored one of the specials: a delicate globe of crab meat and glassy noodles wrapped up in egg-skin, served in a bamboo steamer with a sharp vinegar dip. Another special of garlicky deep-fried quail with worcestershire sauce (a Chinese favourite) was equally good. Aside from the food, the place is unremarkable ? simple decor, rather cramped dining rooms and tedious muzak ? so we recommend it for an everyday lunch rather than a celebration. Waiting staff can be unhelpful, although we had no complaints on our most recent visit"

it has a "budget" star as well as a "critic's choice" star, but i haven't been there myself. good idea though - will steal

suzywong · 28/08/2004 15:24

DH used to swear by the one on Wardour Street with red pillars outside and they use the real dimsum trolleys and it was called ... ... sorry he is in denial that he was ever in London.

The Royal China is absolutely top notch, not your ordinary dim sum paper table cloth restaurant, it is really rather special, can be hard to park near though.

Get to your restaurant of choice by 12pm though.

suzywong · 28/08/2004 15:25

This one in Wardour street is on the same side as WonKees but past it towards Picadilly, it also has dark smoked glass windows and a vestibule - you don't walk directly in to the restaurant.

Royal China have a lovely restaurant in Canary Riverside too, no trolly though, you have to order from a menu but it taste wonderful.

Crikey - it has been years since I have eaten in Chinatown. The one we went to also had red pillars outside but the owner was like Basil Fawlty on steriods - gave the very nice American couple on the next table a really hard time and then refused to accept our order was wrong - so don't get there . . . not much help to you is it?! sorry.

I sincerely hope it wasn't the same one you went to Suzywong . . . .

Dh grew up in China and speaks fluent cantonese (makamsi is actually his nickname - I stole it for mumsnet - and is the "chinese version" of his name) and he and his Chinese friends prefer Royal Dragon (the one serenequeen found recommended). Its green on the outside and next to another green restaurant called something dragon aswell (maybe golden dragon). Its on the left if you are walking towards the "Picadilly Circus end" of the Chinatown street. (As you can see, I'm hopeless at Central london street names.)

We usually go to one at the Wardour St end of Gerrard st called London Chinatown. It has two floors and is slightly less hectic than the ones with trolleys. Good food and friendly waiters. Mostly Chinese customers which is always a good sign!
