Meals when working away

Hello! Smile

I often work away from home and stay in a hotel. I'm looking for advice on evening meals that I could make. I used to eat out but find a lot of food on the menus in restaurants can be quite "carby" and I dare say a high salt intake and the healthier options don't appear to be that nutritious either. I also don't claim on expenses for when I eat out and I'm looking to cut the costs too.

So I'm looking to get a bit creative with what I can rustle up when at my hotel. Some times I stay in a hotel where there is a microwave however predominantly it's just a kettle!

Any ideas would be greatly welcome!

Thank you in advance

You could go to a supermarket and get things for a salad? My go to when working away is a subway salad a multipack of Pepsi max and a bar of chocolate and then I hide away in my room until I have to come out again Blush

Couscous with tinned tuna/salmon/mackerel - or you could buy some ready cooked chicken/salmon flakes and stir through ….

Sort of ramen:
Sachet of miso soup, packet of heat-through noodles, protein of your choice, pack of microwave mixed veg. All doable with just a kettle

You could make a home made ‘pot noodle’ google it. Plenty of receipes on the internet all you need to do is add hot water. You could bring a toaster and toasting bag with you if you want more options just choose a smoking room if you do!!

Boiled eggs in a kettle

I'm sure there's a website devoted to kettle cookery, actually

Do you have a car? If so I'd get something like this coolbox www.halfords.com/camping-leisure/camping/coolboxes/halfords-14-litre-12v-electric-coolbox
and then you can bring leftover food from home. Get the mains adapter so you can plug it in in the hotel room too.

If no car I used to like eating the M&S quiche or salad or cooked chicken legs as felt like "dinner" food but no cooking required.

If you eat fish then tinned fish are a great hotel room go to dinner add to a bagged salad or serve witha granary roll or add to a tin of white beans.

Smoked salmon is also good.

Fresh fruits and yoghurt for desserts

Couscous is easy to make up from the kettle (add in some fish or meat or cherry toms etc)

Avocados are a good filler up food

You can toast sandwiches, etc by wrapping them in tinfoil and ironing them.

I know someone who claims she brings a multi cooker to hotels and buys pre cut veg and makes stews, rice etc. ready to eat in the evening after a long day at a conference/work. Not sure I believe her as I think the cleaning staff would rat.

Her other trick if not travelling by car (and bringing the slow cooker) is to buy some foil. She wraps sandwiches in the foil and uses the hotel iron to "toast" them or make quesidillas.
