How can I feed one gluten free adult and 2 no diet restriction kids on £3 a day? Is it possible? Tia X

How long do you have to do this for ?
How much can you " invest" upfront ? Do you have a store cupboard ? Quick answer is yes but it will be dull, dull dull. Buy oats, milk, rice, lentils, carrots, potatos, cheap bread and the cheapest mart you can find. Porridge for breakfast, dhal and rice, apples, bananas. Veggie soup (carrots potatoes with more lentils) bread for the dcs. Eggs if you can afford them for Spanish ommlete with jacket potatoes.

Sounds like you need to check out Jack Monroe cookingonabootstrap.com/

If you can then go to the supermarket in the evenings when they are doing the final reductions (my Tesco does it at 7pm) and you might be able to pick up some GF (and normal) bread and meat/fish which you can then put in the freezer.
Do the kids get school lunches?

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 19/10/2018 01:47

Omelets with veg and cheese
Baked potatoes
Veg and lentil soups with hard boiled eggs
Buy a chicken and MN the fuck outta it
Make veggie dishes, Dahl, chick pea and spinach stew.
Serve with roast veg.
Can you make pastry? Pies and quiches are tasty and filling. Easy to do with veg and bacon.
Buy full fat everything.

2 weeks. Don't have much in the way of store cupboard other than gravy, salt, baby formula, a few baby dinners, kids cereal and some old slimfast. Do have a few things in the freezer including frozen mixed veg and some fish etc. Got some other random bits, crisps, bread, butter, peanut butter, biscuits but I imagine they won't see out today tbh.

Can you get a foodbank referral OP? Sounds like you need one.

BatFacedOK · 19/10/2018 12:16

42 quid for three of you for two weeks is going to be more than tight. What's the circumstances? Do you have access to a local food bank at all

bumblebee39 · 19/10/2018 13:33

I can get food bank referral that's what I'm trying to work out whether I need one. The bank took some money off me unexpectedly and had some unplanned expenses this month X

BatFacedOK · 19/10/2018 13:41

Yes I'd say you need one. The way you can use the £3 a day for some fresh food like fruit and veg and the odd treat and try and cover some other bits from the food bank. Where are you roughly in the UK?

bumblebee39 · 19/10/2018 18:33

Ended up going to my local food bank but then my tin opener broke. Devastated!

Well done for going to the food bank, that will make your food supplies go a bit further. Now you need to sort out the tin opener situation. Have you got a neighbour that you can ask?

bumblebee39 · 19/10/2018 18:52

Nope hers is broken to! Off to the shop tomorrow 😂

Google 'how to open a tin without a tin opener.' Lots on there

GreedyBastard · 19/10/2018 19:12

use a sharp knife on the tin but be bloody careful.

I would say £40 is doable but will be tight and not very healthy but in the grand scheme of things that wont matter.

As I said its just for 2 weeks. I think with the food bank stuff and stuff I already had in it will be more than comfortable tbh, but then my kids would eat nothing but biscuits, sausages and cucumber if I let them (which I just might have to!)
They are having Fray bentos pies with smash and beans for Sunday lunch and I'll get a pack of sausages so I can have a couple for Sunday dinner, and then have bangers mash and veg another night. Tomorrow we will have fish and chips (already got in) with mushy peas. Breakfast and lunch are easy- cereal or porridge for the kids, and I never eat breakfast anyway, and lunch is sandwiches for them and soup for me. I think I should have enough for a tin opener, and some fruit, milk, bread and veg. Lots of carrots, broccoli, cucumber, bananas and apples but they are all faves anyway.

Look in charity shops for a tin opener - especially the more “jumble sale” type - they usually have a box of random kitchenware for 50p or less an item.

I think you can pick them up in poundland or Wilkos fairly easily and cheaply? Will have a look. Would rather a new one tbh. Hate the thought of other people not cleaning them properly and their being servers debris and detritus 😁

Don't forget potatoes for your sausage and mash

Nacreous · 20/10/2018 01:38

Asda do them for 50p, we had a decent one from there. Hope it goes ok for you.

bumblebee39 · 20/10/2018 08:46

I won't forget the mash! Bag of potatoes is £1 ish in ASDA I believe and I can grab the tin opener while I'm there! X

Do you have any ground almonds lurking at the back of your cupboard? If you do and you can spare an egg, you can make some really nice crackers elanaspantry.com/salt-and-pepper-crackers/

I really feel for you OP. Make sure you look after yourself and don't get ill.

bumblebee39 · 20/10/2018 12:48

No lurking almonds unfortunately. Might be lots of eggs chips and beans this week but the food bank parcel will help and hopefully next month things will be better. Just been one thing after another this month, financially and otherwise, but there's a light at the end of the tunnel (always) X
