Gluten free bread

I am trying to avoid gluten for a while, following the Michael Moseley Clever Gut Diet. Is it possible to have nice gluten free bread?? I have bought wraps and a loaf from Sainsbury's, both quite hard in texture and a bit synthetic in taste. Then I made a green flaxseed loaf from the Clever Gut book - I am ploughing through it with very little enjoyment. Also made buckwheat flatbread (quite tough) and soda bread (dense and crumbly).
Do I need to buy even more special ingredients such as xantham gum, or is there a recipe out there which makes acceptable g/f bread? I do have a bread maker as well, I would just like bread that is a bit closer to the real thing...

Xanthen gum will help but to be honest I have given up on making GF bread as it never turns out well.

In my opinion the best ones to buy are the fresh ones - Genius or Warburton's. I think the Warburton's sourdough cob is the one that is most like normal white bread.

The Schar multigrain loaf is not bad either.

I read ingredients and try to avoid too much rice flour in the blend as it can give a gritty texture.

All gluten free bread is better toasted IMO.

Having said that I don't eat much bread and go for naturally gluten free alternatives like oat cakes (Nairn's are good - some have wheat in so check ingredients). Or I add beans or avocado to salads to make them more substantial.

We like the Bergen bread - it's least awful.

I did make something with xantham gum, - cake I think - and that turned out better than I expected, so might be worth trying. for me it's the gram/chickpea flour that is gritty, rice flour seemed slightly better, but I will watch this post avidly and see if there is the holy grail of GF bread out there somewhere Grin

Mmm, bread which is the "least awful" - oh dear! I have been wondering if I should just stop making any comparisons to normal bread, and accept that nothing has quite the same magical quality as gluten.
But thanks for the tips so far, please keep them coming!

We get lots from wheat free bakery direct - they are on line or in some farm shops. Tbh it's the best bread we've ever find though we don't eat much of it.
