Glut of pears. What will I do with them?

We have one pear tree with a glut of pears. What can I do with them? (Apart from pear and almond tarts). Has anyone ever tried pear jam? Can you share a recipe?

I’m looking at a big bag here. Much as I love pears....

you could try making something like this? link

Melassa · 08/10/2018 17:50

Pear and chocolate cake
Pear and Gorgonzola risotto (or Parmesan, or pecorino)
Serve sliced on a cheese platter with walnuts
Pear sorbet is delicate and refreshing
Pear jam is a bit dull IMO, but you could make a delicate chutney to serve with cheese

I’ll see if I can find recipes for you, otherwise i’ll write up mine

Melassa · 08/10/2018 17:54

This is a risotto recipe although I prefer mine without walnuts. If you use a saltier cheese like Parmesan you can put more pear in

Melassa · 08/10/2018 17:57

And this is the pear and chocolate cake

Pickled pears to serve with cold meats, pork pies, cheese.

Poach and use in
Pear Belle Helene
Pear and chocolate trifle
Pear and walnut crumble

Slice and use in a pheasant or guinea fowl casserole with raisins and Madeira.

Pears preserved in syrup flavoured with ginger are lovely and last ages. Can use them in cake or just on porridge/with yoghurt. You could also give pear butter a go - I used to do it with apples. The fruit gets cooked down much more than with jam to concentrate the flavour so it uses up a good number!

Poach in spiced red wine and serve with mascarpone.

Oh thank you all. Some great ideas. I will work through them. I’ve enough pears, even with giving loads away. Plenty of lovely recipes.

Pheasant/guinea fowl casserole sounds delicious. Sunday dinner sorted I think!

Pear and burrata salad. Core or quarter the pears, lightly roast or griddle. Melt a combo of sugar and salt in a pan and toss in walnuts to make salt candied walnuts. Let them cool down, do NOT be tempted to eat them straight sweat (speaking from bitter, burnt experience!). When they cool down, smash them up into pieces

Plate up with lambs lettuce, pear, scattering of the walnuts and big bits of lovely burrata. Squeeze a little bit of sticky balsamic glaze over the top. Eat, and weep tears of pure joy.

Had it in a restaurant once and spent ages afterwards working out how to make it!

Straight away even

Pear butter?? Never came across that before. Like a flavoured butter?

Preserved pears would use up some. Nice gift too

Nigel Slaters Pear and Cholcolate crumble. It’s absolutely divine! Tip - use a normal crumble topping and not the weird one he suggests which never turns out properly!

Oh my goodness - I may not have enough pears😂. Love these.
Pear and burrata salad sounds like a lovely starter for a dinner party. Mighty impressive made with ‘home made’ pears!!

I brought apple crumble to a lunch yesterday. Shame I didn’t think of pear. What was wrong with me. Definitely bringing a few pear desserts next time. Live Nigel Slater.

I’ll work my way through the recipes!

I’m jealous. My parents had wonderful pear trees when I was growing up. Shop bought just don’t taste the same. I might have to get some.

ScienceIsTruth · 08/10/2018 19:08

This is a fab recipe; it's easy and keeps well. Makes a lovely dessert.

And a really nice gift if you preserve them in a Kilmer jar (or something similar).

I easily have 2kg going spare. And some to make some other treats. Great to pull something out of the cupboard from the summer in the depths of winter iykwim.

The pear tree is in the garden since we bought the house about 15 years ago and never really fruited before. This summer was really dry but all of a sudden the tree is overwhelmed with fruit.

Fruit butter is kind of like a very smooth jam. With apples, you essentially make a sweet spiced apple sauce and keep cooking it down until it spreads like room temperature butter. It's good! I've never tried it with pears, but it concentrates the flavour of the fruit so might work quite well...
