buying food/drink for visitors

we are quite limited in what food we have in the house cos i don't like to have a lot of junk about.

i only drink water, milk and decaffeinated (sp?) tea and my mum has the decaff coffee. because of this we don't buy squash, fizzy drinks, juice etc. we also don't generally have biscuits, crisps, chocolate, cakes.

if you don't actually eat something but it is often something you might offer someone when they pop round do you buy them or not bother and go for the if they don't like it they can lump it school of thought?

I have workman / builder tea and coffee - everyone else gets what I have.

BishyBarneyBee · 13/06/2007 14:38

oh and I bought a packet of rich tea whne they fitted my kitchen as I thought deep down it might meant they did it nice.

MrsWho · 13/06/2007 14:39

I don't drink tea or coffee but have them in the house for random visitors but it rarely gets used so ends up getting chucked out as its 2 years out of date or something

I don't usually offer cakes/biscuits either
(thoughtthat might be why no one comes )

ComeOVeneer · 13/06/2007 14:39

Have what we usually have and that is all I offer. If we are having people around for a meal I will get in other things.

NoodleStroodle · 13/06/2007 14:43

Always looks after your builders and tradesmen...pleased to hear it pays off.

Back to original thread - I stand firm and try not to pander to everyone else but we do have quite a wide range of stuff.

MrsWho · 13/06/2007 14:46

Oh Builders are diferent I always offer them biscuits so they work harder and they come back

dressedupnowheretogo · 13/06/2007 14:47

other wise im not to bothered

nappyaddict · 13/06/2007 14:48

don't mean tradesmen always give them treats, i just mean general friends/family who might pop round. i always get the impression my cousin thinks i am mean for not giving her children strawberry milkshake and coke like she always offers my son!

we have cofe in for when my mum sits for us. we rarely have fizzy in so don't buy that especially. sure there are some biscuits going soft somewhere - can you tell i don't get those either!! if i have made a cake (very rare) then i will offer that as usually i end up throwing some of it

musicianswidowAKAmumofmonsters · 13/06/2007 14:51

coffee

I am typing whilst talking to a 2 yo and listening to dp waffle

Whoooosh · 13/06/2007 15:02

I personally do make sure I have a wide range of stuff for visitors.
Am slightly obsessed with making people feel welcome so despite me not drinking normal or herbal tea-we have it in the house. We only have skimmed milk but have some uht full fat in the cupboard. We don't eat biscuits but will always have some around just in case.

DP and I only drink wine or vodka but we have bottles of whisky, gin, vermouth, malibu, bacardi etc etc.

As for workmen-they always get spoiled.

mylittlefreya · 13/06/2007 16:28

I have specific things for specific people that we don't eat/ drink (earl grey tea, decaf coffee, gin) if they are regular visitors enough to warrant it. I'll buy juice or bicuits or whatever if I know people are coming. If they just drop in - tough!
