Just for four people.

I'm thinking prawn cocktail for starter.

Stuck on a main. Was coq au vin a 70s dish?

Dessert- trifle ( I hatethe stuff but others like it) or ? I'm not much of a baker but black forest gateau maybe.

Starter: Prawn cocktail/paté and toast/ slice of honeydew melon with a maraschino cherry attached to the top by a cocktail stick.
Main: rump or sirloin or T-bone steak with chips, half a tomato, sliced mushrooms and garden peas/ coc-au-vin/ Boeuf bourguinon
Pudding: sherry trifle/ Black Forest gateau/ lemon meringue tart.
Nibbles: twiglets, cheese footballs, salted peanuts, 'ordinary' crisps
Wine: French or German. Mateus Rose, Liebfraumilch (Black Tower), Piesporter, sweet sherry, white or red port.
After Eight mints.

Aldi do good Black Fuorest gateaux

FadedRed · 04/10/2018 16:23

Baked Alaska was a 'spectacular' pudding, if you can be bothered with the faffing about.

FadedRed · 04/10/2018 16:24

Have you got (beg or borrow) a Fondue set?

Yvaine1 · 04/10/2018 16:25

Vienetta.

Or pink blamange if you wish to be really 70s exotic.

legolimb · 04/10/2018 16:25

Some great ideas thanks.

I draw the line at Liebfraumilch and Mateus Rose however Grin. I like nice wine Wine.

Before I opened the thread I was going to say prawn cocktail and black forest gateau!
Mains - yes to beef bourguinon or stroganoff or salmon en croute but yes coq au vin too.
Has to be Twiglets and a bottle of Blue Nun with Matchmaker mint sticks.

GooseDownCreek · 04/10/2018 16:27

Yes coq au vin was 70s. Also Duck a L'Orange and steak and chips though the latter doesn't really shout 70s.
The first time I ever went to a restaurant with a boyfriend was when I was 18 in 1976 and we had prawn cocktail, followed by steak and chips and a bottle of Mateus Rose.

newhousenewstart · 04/10/2018 16:28

It has to be prawn cocktail, steak and fat chips with half a tomato, half a flat mushroom and peas. Followed by Black Forest gateau

FlyingMonkeys · 04/10/2018 16:34

Devilled eggs, quiche, Tiramisu.

Botanicbaby · 04/10/2018 16:38

Crepes Suzette for dessert. Pancakes in an orange liqueur! Easy.

It doesn’t have to be BFG for every 1970s themed dinner!

Loopytiles · 04/10/2018 16:40

Love all these foods, except devilled eggs!

Crepes suzette.

AdaColeman · 04/10/2018 16:54

Apero, Harvey Wallbanger or Negroni with cottage cheese dip & crisps.

Starter, egg mayonnaise or chicken liver pâté, or a chilled soup

Main, Boeuf bourguignon, or rack of lamb with paper frills and garden peas in halved tomatoes.

Pudding, Lemon tart or crepe Suzette or Veanetta (sp?)

pallisers · 04/10/2018 16:59

melon and cheese cubes on sticks
Glass of orange juice as a starter
Steak diane

Or gammon and pineapple. Main and dessert on the same plate at the same time. Saves on time and washing up.

These look lovely if not ;-)

Prawn cocktail
Chicken Kiev
Black Forest Gateaux
Chardonnay wine

IHeartKingThistle · 04/10/2018 18:41

My grandma gave me one of her old cookbooks once. It had a recipe (with pics!) for a turkey crown with mandarin segments encased in ASPIC!

Nearlyoldenoughtowearpurple · 04/10/2018 23:06

My mum used to make a layered concoction of shop bought chocolate cake laced with alcohol, with whipped cream and tinned cherries, garnished with grated chocolate and maraschino cherries.
A real showstopping desert for you !

Annandale · 04/10/2018 23:09

Lasagne with salad for main.
