I’m making my sons birthday cake for tomorrow. I’m following Jane’s patisseries Oreo drip cake, and I forgot to add the baking powder! It’s in the oven. What do I do?! Do I need to start again?

Yes. Without baking powder it will not be cake. More like a sort of floury omelet.

Actually - might depend on the recipe. Some recipes use Self Raising flour and then also include baking powder for an extra boost. If it's SR flour you may be OK and have a cake that is just a bit stodgier than would be ideal.

If it's plain flour my earlier response stands.

I used self raising flour! X

Sr flour it should be all right then. Post a pic when you take it out? Good luck! How old are the children? Doubt that they'll mind if it's a wee bit stodgier than it's meant to be.

He will be 9! He said this morning “if It doesn’t work will
You just buy one”?! Ermmm no it will work even if it’s the death of me 😂😂

They look ok. Are they spongy to touch?

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 27/09/2018 09:46

Yeah they seem to be!

If you used self raising flour then you don't really need baking powder. I've never used it as I always use SR flour

onalongsabbatical · 27/09/2018 09:47

Well they look fab! Can we have a pic of the finished cake too? I've googled it but don't want to post a pic of it here - that'd be too much pressure! Grin

TheMagicTorch · 27/09/2018 09:50

They look good to me!

I make cakes for friends&family, I once put my three tiers into the oven and spotted a circle of greaseproof/baking paper on the kitchen bench 🤦 had to start again for that tier as couldn't get it out of the tin!

But yours look fab - on a side note I love Jane's Patisserie recipes - I make her gingerbread cake every Christmas and goes down a treat if you fancy making that next!

I love baking but I’m crap! My late mum used to bake all the time. Iv found it really helps with my anxiety x

You use either SR flour or flour and baking powder, not both

theonlywayisdown · 27/09/2018 10:01

Have a little sliver, should be fine.

Reminds me of when MIL sent me “DH’s favourite chocolate cake recipe” out of the blue. As 1. I had asked her for DH childhood recipes previously and she had ignored me and 2. DH told me MIL had never made any chocolate cake never mind a “favourite” one and 3. MIL kept asking me whether I’d tried it yet, overasking, I was suspicious.

I looked at the recipe... plain flour but no raising agent. Hmm I put the recipe into google and there it was, Mary Berry, but the recipe called for self-raising flour and baking powder.

I think MIL had tried to sabotage me!

Anyway, I made the cake the way it should have been made and sent a picture. She asked over and over about whether it rose and how in the picture it looked a little flat (it didn’t) because he was difficult to get this cake to rise blah blah blah.

Oh MIL, try harder next time lol!

inquiquotiokixul · 27/09/2018 10:15

@theonlywayisdown that's a brilliant opportunity though.

Practice your deeply concerned face. And your head-tilt. Poor confused MIL has been having terrible trouble with her baking as she doesn't understand that every baking recipe needs a raising agent. Oh dear, do you think she needs some additional support to cope with life in general?

TheMagicTorch · 27/09/2018 11:43

@Mummysharkdoodoodoo I totally get the anxiety thing, I have baked for years to relax. Something about measuring the ingredients, seeing it all come together at the end is very satisfying. Even if it doesn't always work out perfectly!

Bloody Nora. That looks amazing. Well done you!

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 27/09/2018 11:58

Thank you!! I can’t believe how much I enjoyed it. I had music blaring, daughter was making a mess in the dining area but I didn’t care 😂
