... when DCs (14 and 9) have finished meal, to make a change from the usual fruit, yoghurt or cheese & biscuits. I make rice puddings or semolina occasionally, and usually have things like hot cross buns or crumpets in the freezer to offer them when needed. Don't want to have puds such as crumble/steamed puds/chocolate things as a regular, reserve these for when we hve vistors. Should add that I am pretty good at estimtating what they will eat, so they don't always need anything else, but good to have some "storecupboard ideas" for the days they seem to have hollow legs.

fruit kebabs go down well in our house. also grilled bananas.

I've done a berry couscous thing before now which I didn't like but DS loved. Just couscous and then some (defrosted) frozen berries.

baked apples also good but take a while

popcorn with cocoa powder and cinnamon also v low fat and filling. And they like watching the popcorn pop.

TooTicky · 10/06/2007 11:33

meowmix, do you just literally sprinkle on cocoa powder and cinnamon? Do you sweeten it at all?

My dcs love oatcakes with jam (well, fruit spread) or honey.

Apple/raisin pancakes? Drop scones? Not store cupboardy but v. popular and quick.

thanks meowmix. Some great ideas, esp like the idea of the couscous, cos it's different, quick and things we normally have in.

dropscones & pancakes - great ideas, again would normally have the stuff in, the children are old enough to wait, and even make them, if we needed extras in a hurry. Thanks tooticky

we never have afters, exept very occasionally we get some ice-cream...

TooTicky · 10/06/2007 11:39

In the autumn add blackberries to apple pancakes - yummaroo!

meowmix · 10/06/2007 11:44

the popcorn - no we just sprinkle (thru a sieve or it clumps) straight on while its hot. You can add sugar but then you have to wait for it to cool down or risk burnt tongue!

another one is a tortilla/flat bread warmed in microwave for about 20 secs, spread half with cream cheese and a spoonful of honey and add chopped bananas/dried fruit/pear etc. Roll up and then cut into chunks.

Even better with a caramel saucey thing but then... it fails on health grounds.

Also the couscous, popcorn and tortilla things can be done by the kids themselves with supervision... which is nice

lilolilmanchester · 10/06/2007 11:47

Tortilla thing sounds yum! Some great ideas, just the kinds of things I'm looking for, please keep them coming!!!

organic apple crumble
make the "crumble" part from oats, wholewheat and buckwheat flower, linseeds, sesame seeds, unrefined sugar and butter and give them cream with it
not slimming but kids don't need that! UBER UBER HEALTHY YOU CAN'T GO WRONG

lilolilmanchester · 10/06/2007 12:00

we have an apple tree in the garden, so do lots of crumbles, bur really like the sound of your crumble topping Tovik, thanks

at the moment, while in season, bowls of berries are pretty tasty.

Sometimes have frozen juice or yoghurts in those plastic lolly things

flapjacks with less sugar and berries in, linseeds, sesame seeds etc.

Mine are also happ with a 2 or 3 squares of dark choc

I'd like them not to expect pudding every day, but they do, probably because I do

Mrscarrot · 10/06/2007 12:10

also sometimes have stewed dried fruit like figs, dates, pears etc, they're very toffee like and very sweet. Nice with plain yoghurt, or cream for luxury

also yoghurt with honey and nuts
