mouli/food mill- where can I get one??

Have already got a braun hand held blender for pureeing ds's food.,but where would I buy a mouli food mill, as referred to in Ananbel Karmel book? Would like to give ds some pureed dried apricots and she recommends using a mouli to remove the indigestible skins. Amazon did a little stainless steel one, but out of stock now.
BTW, gina ford book just says to puree cooked dried apricots, doesn't mention about the skins, is removing the skin necessary??

Urchin do do them - but are a real pain in the *rse. Been trying to buy one - they are v. disorganised and don't even seem to have one in stock. When they deliver it Dd will be big enough to make her own dinner!

I soak them overnight and they rehydrate, boil them for a few minutes and then puree them with a hand blender. I personally don't remove the skin as it's soft enough. Remember to get the Unsulphured apricots. the ones that are orange in colour have got sulphur in them to preserve the colour. unsulphured apricots look as if they're going off but they're not. You'll be able to get them in any health food shop that sell Suma products.

i don't think removing the skins of apricots is neccessary, but if they're soft enough (after cooking, or previously soaked in water) you should be able to scoop out the flesh with a teaspoon.
IMO you don't need any kind of gadget to puree baby food. It's only for a short period of time. Most fruit/vegetables (cooked or raw depending on texture) can be easily purreed with a normal masher, the kind you use for mashed potatoes. meat, fish and beans can be done in a food processor very easily.
Happy cooking!

Thanks for tips on mouli and apricots-have bought some organic untreated ones and they look very brown and wrinkly-can't work out whether the skins will need removing or what!!!

no. just soak overnight , boil for 5-10 mins and then puree.

alibo · 25/08/2004 12:32

Do you just soak them in water, and how long for?

overnight

bung the apricots in the microwave for 1-1 1/2 mins...same as soaking overnight or boiling...don't need to remove skins...cool them down and feel around in case there is any stone in them (v bad news if this gets left in both for your blender and poor baby!) then whizz them up with whatever your whizzing them (i find that trying to whiz them on their own is difficult unless you're making loads of them).

btw, if you've got a braun, why do you need a mouli...i've got both and wish i'd just used a handblender straightaway.

apricots soaking as we speak!! sophable, braun hand blender great for pureeing, but no good for separating flesh from skins, etc, as with peas, sweetcorn and other fruit/veg you may want to remove skins, pips from etc.
