we're off on hols to la manga in spain in october when ds will be 7 months. we don't eat meat or chicken but we do eat fish and i'm concered that he won't get enough protein while we're away. has anyone seen any babyfood that has fish in it? i suppose i can find some with cheese in but we're going for 8 days so will need to take a range of jars so he doesn't get bored! he's just coming up for 6 months now so he's still doing veg and fruit at the moment. he also reacts badly to baby rice so breakfasts are a challenge...........

Umm on a note my ds did not eat any protein (except any found in breastmilk) meat or otherwise due to being a fussyeater initally until well over 9 mths old so do not worry a bit about protein...
is he ok with readybreak or oats, you can vary the fruit ot make a change and this can suffice as dinner on a good night

hmm prob too young reading back for soem reason I thought your ds was older...

issywoo, daft question but will you be cooking any meals whilst you're away.....and if you are going into a restaurant and they are serving fish I wonder if you could chat to the local people and explain your situation and maybe your lovely food could be mulched up for a small price (when my ds and dd were babies they had what we had and even on Christmas Day when ds was just 5 months old we got the old blender out and he had roast pheasant and all the trimmings....it's woth a go at any rate as don't know much about this as we did ocassionally have jars but our meals were easily enough broken down.....if this answer is no good then am sure other mumsnetters will be able to help you!

My DS2 likes the Cow & Gate Lentil Bake. It's the only non dairy protein veggie meal I've found. It's a 4 month jar and I get mine in tesco.
Also, my friend has just got back from Spain and she said that some of the baby food in jars there had fish in it which she thought smelled disgusting but her DD loved it!

will go and buy the lentil bake - it doesn't cause wind does it?
haven't tried readybrek yet as i assumed he was too young and what kind of oats should i get and where from?
will take my blender on holiday as we are self catering but when we went there earlier this year i didn't notice any fresh fish in the supermarket.glad to hear protein is not essential although i do worry also about him getting enough iron..............

All GOOD Stuff baby food is approved by the Vegetarian Society and its organic. www.allgoodstuff.com You can get it in Sainsburys its in the chilled ready meal aisle (not the baby aisle) so look for it by Blue Parrot Cafe.

look at the baby organix and hipp organics range in your supermarket or boots. can't remember which does which but one does a lentil and vegetable one which mine really likes, also a fish and pasta in tomato sauce, and one also does pasta with butterbeans (think that one is hipp). most of those are from 7 months but you can just squish any lumps down with a fork... I used them for mine from 6 months.
remember that yoghurts and cheese are good protein - you could always add grated cheese into vegetable puree and keep stuffing the yoghurts down him. he'll be fine for a week I'm sure.

re breakfasts, hipp organic also do some good dried breakfast food in pouches - there is one oaty one that is particularly nice. have a look.

issywoo, you may find some in Spain, as when we were in France this year there seemed to be a wider range of jars with fish in them than in the UK. I think there are some Mnetters in Spain, might be worth starting a thread asking them for help.

CassieD · 17/09/2004 15:37

Issywoo, have you tried just buying a veggie babyfood, and adding mushed up tofu? I've never been to Spain so I'm not sure but I would think they sell tofu there to add to your veg.

I personally am a devoted meat eater, but my sister is a vegetarian and she used to give her ds tofu all the time.

Hope this helps...

We found fish baby food in Menorca. It was probably made by Nestle though...

WideWebWitch · 17/09/2004 23:52

Issywoo, he'll be fine, I'm sure! My 2 are both veggie and the baby Organix range has lentil stuff and stuff with spinach and potato and all sorts of incredibly healthy stuff.

Chandra · 18/09/2004 00:20

Organix does one with tuna fish and spinach but I don't recommend it, I have no problem with other Organix products but this was so awful that Ds didn't wanted it, I almost threw up when I tried it and my dogs who have the soul of a vacuum cleaner decided it was not for them either .
