Hello all!

A bit of advice please for a cake novice!

My brother is getting married in just over a week and when he came to visit me today said that they aren't having a cake as they can't afford one. :(

They haven't asked for any gifts so was just going to give them vouchers but have now agreed I'll sort a cake.

It's basically too late notice to get a proper cake made so I am going order simple white pre made cakes from marks and Spencer's.

Like this modern cake

Or this traditional cake

I was going to get an extra large and large tier. Stack them (in the easiest way possible) and place some premade decorations on (seen some lovely simple ones online).

I know nothing about stacking cakes though !!

The "modern" cakes don't seem to come on the silver boards so I'd need to dowel these wouldn't I ?

However, if you look at the "traditional" cakes - in one of the pictures they've stacked it without pillars and literally just plonked the cakes on top of one another, boards and all!! I'll try to attach this specific pic.

My question is, could I get the traditional cakes, turn up at the venue with them in the boxes, put them on top of each other on the cake table (boards and all) and place some silk flower decorations round (to obscure the boards?)

Or do I really need to dowel them?

Thanks all xx

M&S have instruction videos on their website: help.marksandspencer.com/support/products-services/stack-wedding-cake

Memories ... I created a 3-tier wedding cake for a friend by purchasing 3x Tesco 'celebration cakes' in various sizes, buying the pillars & dowels separately, and then some silver horseshoe decorations and sugar syrup to fix them .... And that was before Youtube videos told me how to make it work ....

We bought a cake stand like the picture you attached. We then went to my favorite local bakery who make fresh sponges with cream and jam in the middle. We tarted the cakes up with lace wrapped around the outside and fresh fruit on top. It looked amazing and every last bit of them were eaten. In total I think it all came in at less than £80 for roughly 100 people! We had the three cakes on display and then 2 extra big ones. So glad we didn't get an actual wedding cake as most of them tend to go uneaten!

I had Connie and Colin wedding cakes and they were awesome!

Yes you definitely need to dowel the bottom tier. All dowels need to be the same size.
Careful what flowers you use if going for fresh, as some are toxic making them poisonous. For a quick cake I’d advise silk flowers, then there’s no stress from contamination. Alternatively more supermarkets sell small icing flowers.

I could help if you are in Herts area - if the dolls are taller then your cake and canny cit them down - don't worry - put 4 or five in the base cake in the middle of the cake so it looks like a circle approx 2inche in diameter then with 6- 8 dowels create another circle around the smaller one- this will give the other cake stability - you will have a gap between the bottom layer and the second layer - Ps the dowels can be prepared before you get to the venue- then add in the flowers whether fresh or silk inbetween the gaps - ĺeave a few on the table -if possible use the same colours and flowers as the bouquet - will look absolutely stunning - wish I could help x

Hi op, this is my wedding cake I put together myself. The stand was from eBay, cakes from Tesco. I decorated it with ribbon and artificial flowers. I don't know if you can see but the bottom tier's cake board is slightly smaller than the actual stand, so I just bought a bigger board from eBay and placed it underneath the largest cake. It was really easy to assemble and very cheap! Good luck!

Ok ... so I'm sat in the back of the car driving the 4 hours to village where wedding happening !

Wedding on sat (startlng 2pm) and I'm collecting the cakes from nearest m&s tomorrow afternoon.

They come on separate cardboard circles and I have the decorations and metal cake stand (3 separate tiers, no dowels needed) in the boot!!

The lady that owns the wedding venue has said I can gain access and assemble the cake on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. I'd rather do it on fri afternoon (go straight from m&s) as I have shit loads to do on sat morning anyway (family coming to our Airbnb, me and the baby to get ready etc etc).

So.... if I assemble the cake on fri afternoon would it be ok until sat? It's a combo of fruit cake and sponge, all covered in royal icing. I could loosely place some large pieces of tin foil over it to cover it a bit.

Or should I wait until sat morning to assemble? Don't want anything going off/dry (is that likely)?

Thanks again for your help

X

When you say assemble what are you actually doing? Are you just literally opening the boxes and putting each cake on one of the “shelves” of the stand? If so it will be fine. I put the flowers and ribbon on my cake a couple of days before the wedding, then went to the venue myself the night before to assemble it all on the stand. Cake that is covered with icing doesn’t need to be covered by foil or film, the icing itself will stop the cal from drying out. Good luck, looking forward to seeing a pic!

divafever99 · 20/09/2018 13:28

Cake not cal!

Shazafied · 20/09/2018 16:48
