Waffles, bloody waffles...

DS overendulged on waffles in the US recently.

Stupidly I bought a waffle maker but can I find a recipe that works? Too eggy, too sticky, too sweet, too much fat...

Has anyone a recipe that is (relatively) low fat that won't glue itself to my waffle maker?

Bloody waffles. I only like the potato ones myself...

mine is a massive amount, but you could scale it down...I have the 4waffle cuisinart one, it's a beast

I do sometimes do the whole recipe and freeze them, they reheat nicely in the toaster, and I quite like them a bit crisp!

600g plain flour
4tbs granulated sugar
2 tablespoons baking powder
1 teaspoon bicarb
1 teaspoon salt
780ml skimmed milk
170ml vegetable oil
4 eggs

Just like making any batter, dry ingreds into a bowl, wet in a well and mix them gently together until lump free, and let it stand for a bit

On the whole I find it is best to whack the heat up to maximum, let it sit for aaaaaaaaaaages at maximum heat and then put the batter in otherwise they are flabby and stick like a bugger and then you are doomed!

oooh and i forgot to say and don't read this if you ever want to stay thin, but

melt a goodly amount of butter, and make some cinnamon sugar, brush the freshly made waffles with the butter and then shimmy them about with the cinnamon sugar and you have CHURRO WAFFLES!!

AsAProfessionalFekko · 02/09/2018 11:12

Bicarb and banking powder - not seen that! I will give it a try. The best ones I have made so far were using batter that had been in the fridge overnight.

Sadly my machine doesn't have a changeable temperature - but it can make panini and toasties!

Oh sleep - they look like the syrup waffles that I really like!

We use this recipe. Perfect every time.

let it sit and heat up for a good while then....it's similar to when you cook steak, let the heat do the work, if you throw a steak in and leave it, when it's done it will release itself from the pan so you can turn it, same principle for waffles

if it's not moving, it's not done!

My husband uses a really simple recipe from his Swedish Aunty. It's never failed. I shall ask him to look it up and translate - then be back!

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 02/09/2018 11:34

I use the same one as @MrsChollySawcutt

It’s perfect every single time. Don’t overbear your batter!

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 02/09/2018 11:35

*overbeat
Not overbear. Overbearing waffles!

MissCherryCakeyBun · 05/09/2018 19:20

@Lollygaggles any news on the recipe?

MadisonAvenue · 05/09/2018 19:23

Oh what a coincidence! I've been looking for a waffle recipe after buying a maker a week or so back (because we love the ones we always have for breakfast in the US) and not being sure which is best.

SummersB · 06/09/2018 22:47

Oooh thanks for the recipes! Hmmm must dig out our waffle maker at the weekend. Love the idea of churros waffles!

Unescorted · 06/09/2018 22:50

Felicity Cloakes one for Belgian waffles is good. It is a yeasted recipe rather than the American ones. Use a flick of clarified butter to grease.

bluetrampolines · 07/09/2018 14:01

This is helpful thank you.

haggisaggis · 07/09/2018 15:24

I cheat and buy the bags of Krusteaz pancake mix from Costco - there's a bit on the packet explaining how you use it for waffles (add an egg and some oil). I find it works well.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 09/09/2018 10:34

Tried this - very thick batter and a wee bit salty for us. On but wouldn't get it again (also rather expensive).

We are having waffles almost every day! (Darnit)

I don't get the point of ready made dry mixes. Most recipes are just flour, baking powder, salt, maybe some oil and then mixed with the egg, milk that you have to add to a mix anyway. It's hardly complicated to get together.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 09/09/2018 14:03

Thought it was worth a try...
