Eating problems

I have a 10 month old boy who used to eat pretty much anything I put in front of him but over the last 5 weeks his appetite has declined and he has started to refuse lots of different types of food except yogurt and rice pudding (and even that's touch and go sometimes?.

Occasionally he will eat a couple of spoons of what I make and then scream the place down until I get him out of the highchair. Other times he just doesn't want anything.

He has four teeth through, and my Health Visitor keeps putting his appetite problem down to him probably having more teeth coming through, but after 5 weeks I'm getting pretty desperate for ideas of what to try with him!

I've tried to give him extra milk in the day if he won't eat any solids but he won't drink milk at any time other than in a morning when he gets up or before bed at night.

Help!

I don't think a baby will starve himself... he probably just needs only what he's eating right now. I'd go with it unless he starts looking dehydrated or skinnier.

So, do you reckon he's eating only rice pudding and yoghurt with 2 drinks of milk a day? Or does he also eat bits of other things and / or finger foods? You might be surprised at how much he's managing to eat even with a relatively limited palate. My dd's always been very fussy, never had a before and after period and she's 22 months now. Since about 18 months I kind of stopped worrying as I thought so long as she's getting some milk (she has about 3/4 pint a day), a bit of veg, some kind of cereal (bread, pasta, etc.) she seems to be doing ok.

How's his weight? Dd's always been on the lean side but even at her worst moments never really lost any apart from when ill.

And though it's rare for me to agree with anything a hv says, I have found that when dd's teething she goes off her food massively, though as you say, not often for 5 weeks.

Thanks for everyone's input. It's nice to know that others have gone through the same thing!
He has eaten his breakfast over the last 2 days (1-1.5 weetabix with milk) and today he managed a few spoonfuls of spagetti hoops and toast, so hopefully he is getting better!
His weight seems ok, so I guess I just have to go with his eating habits and hope he gets his appetite back soon!

Hope his appetite comes back soon sassy - my dd is teething and also has a sickness bug, she's off her food and also taking much less milk but has a huge baby tummy so i think she's got plenty of stores to work off. Does he eat cold food better than hot? Also my dd won't eat hardly anything off a spoon anyway, just screams the place down until she gets finger foods, v independent girl.

JiminyCricket. Yes he will often eat cold food better than warm. I wondered about the eating off a spoon thing as he will eat toast and sandwiches but only if I break mouth sized pieces off them and put them into his mouth! We went to his gran's today for Sunday lunch and he managed to eat a bit of a blended roast chicken dinner so I was pretty pleased about that until I thought maybe it's my cooking he doesn't like. I think I just have to accept it's a mixture of his teeth coming through, being awkward and just plain trying it on with me! Little rascal!!!!
