LOL! I'm always ordering the wrong size of things when i internet shop

i would've thought they'd be ok to freeze but I don't know from experience. I'd probably chop the root ginger up into portion sized pieces first though.

Twinkie · 20/08/2004 11:31

Yes I am sure you can, have bought them frozen before - probably be better to chop or grate first and then freeze in a little box rather than as single pieces.

Piffleoffagus · 20/08/2004 11:33

ginger is best frozen IMHO, it makes it easier to grate, I always freeze mine..
Chilis must be fine too...

SenoraPostrophe · 20/08/2004 11:33

You shouldn't need to freeze the ginger - it keeps for ages as the edges dry out and seal in the middle part.

You could always make some candied ginger.mmmm.

taramac · 20/08/2004 11:34

You can freeze a whole piece of ginger - I do mine like this always and then u can grate it directly into your pot/pan etc from the freezer skin and all - very handy.

yes you can freeze chillis whymummy

I am going to brag now.....I have grown loads of chillis in my window box (and honestly though I would need a greenhouse to grow them) but there are loads and I was starting to panic about what to do with them all! but my trusty stepdad said i could freeze them, phew!

SenoraPostrophe · 20/08/2004 11:43

wm - I'm not sure, I've only ever eaten other people's. I assume you just boil it up with sugar - it's delicious. Hang on, I'll go and see what Mrs Beeton says.

spacemonkey · 20/08/2004 11:43

SenoraPostrophe · 20/08/2004 11:45

LOL whymummy - I've done the same, I once got a potato mountain from Tesco - huge bag instead of small bag, then they'd substituted more potatoes for the sweet potatoes I'd ordered plus a small box of new potatoes became two as they were on BOGOF.

MeanBean · 20/08/2004 12:13

Senorapostrophe, you show off! Fancy you having a Mrs Beeton! Where did you get it from? I've been looking for years...

Sandi102 · 20/08/2004 13:51

we buy fresh chillies and ginger, then grind them, then makes little cubes of them and place them in the freezer. My mum's been doing it ever since I can remember. Great for making curries.

wilbur · 20/08/2004 14:03

Mrs Beeton was a Victorian/Edwardian housewife who wrote a manual for women about how to cook and run a home. It's brilliant and hilarious as well. I gave a copy to my SIL for a hen night present - she's not the domestic kind - and she loves it. You can get a copy here , meanbean.

lol wm! Glad you sorted it out! Really interested to read all these tips... i use ginger loads and always have a bit in the fridge for fear of running out... it'd be great to freeze some for emergencies!!!
