Huge apple glut - ideas please

I have a huge glut of apples in the garden and I have no idea what to do with them - any ideas?

So far I have made/am planning to make

  • chutney
  • crumble
  • dried apple rings
  • Scandi apple cake
  • perhaps I'll do the BBC winter spice jelly for Christmas

Would like to find some other not too sweet options as DH is diabetic

Offer them to your local homeless shelter

Apple sauce and apple butter!

Oh, and apple fruit leather is great, too. No need to sweeten unless you’re using tart apples.

Pork and apple burgers
Pork and apple sausage rolls (Jamie Oliver's recipe)
Apple snow
Eve's pudding

Apple purée is a good way to sweeten porridge.

We have lots this year. I have done everything you suggested but also we bought a fruit press from Amazon so we can make juice. We drank some of the juice and made the rest into wine.

Also when I make apple pie or crumble I put a layer of stewed apple in the bottom and then I can get more in.

I also use them as a kind of trivet when I roast pork or ham. So just sit the meat on top of apples and onions.

Some great ideas here - many thanks.

Has anyone found a successful way to make a no added sugar apple puree?

Flapjacks
Apple sauce, then put it in smoothies

I have never found an artificial sweener that I like so I don't use them at all. I'm not in the UK. Our apples are a variety called Anna and they are fairly sweet.

I have been known to use honey or syrup instead of sugar but that probably doesn't help. My only other suggestion would be to mix the apples with sweeter fruit. I have used prars and peaches successfully or maybe driex fruit like apricots or raisins.

Cook the apples up with sugar and bottle it for use during the winter in apple sauce, and crumbles.

You can add a pinch of bicarbonate to cranberry sauce to reduce the amount of sugar you need, maybe the same trick would work? It neutralizes some of the acid.

However, it doesn’t work with cranberries to omit the sugar entirely and increase the bicarbonate.

We make juice. Now that its litres and litres we've got our own juice press, before that our local town farmer's market organised an apple pressing day when you could turn up with stacks of apples and get them juiced. DS's school does something similar.

Home made apple juice is amazing!

Ifailed · 24/08/2018 11:31

Cider.

thekingfisher · 24/08/2018 11:36

mrsnec where on amazon did you get your Apple press for juice? We need one but seem to be hundreds available with variable reviews ....

mrsnec · 24/08/2018 12:12

We have this one and its fine. Did need a couple of extra blocks though and bolt it down but otherwise it's great.
