Will be making toad in the hole for 2 small children tommorrow. Have made batter and will get sausages out of the freezer soon.

How do i construct it? Stick the batter in to cook and then poke the sausages in.

Help!!

Noooo!

Cook the sausages in the tin until they are browned and the oil is really really hot. THEN pour in the batter and cook until risen and brown.

binker · 04/06/2007 18:43

yes, must be really, really hot !

sarahlou1uk · 04/06/2007 18:45

make sure your oven is turned up really high and then once the batter has started to rise, gradually turn it down over a period of 10 mins until you are at gas 7 (sorry, don't know electric version only use gas).

So i need to brown the sausages off in a frying pan - can i do it that way so the fat comes off whilst i am heating up some oil in a tin in the oven and then stick the sausages in the bottom and add the batter.

For about 20 minutes? Can i put in veg or would that be gross?

I have never done this sort of cooking before.

You don't need to brown them in a frying pan, they will brown in the tin in the oven with bit of vegetable oil. And you need a decent amount of oil otherwise the batter won't rise and it will be quite unappetising. I'm not sure if veg in the batter will work. Gravy is good.

This is a favourite of mine!

binker · 04/06/2007 18:50

I'd just put the sausages in the baking tin and cook until nice and brown and there should be enough oil from them to cook the batter with - dh usually cooks the sausages in some extra oil - must be really hot before you add batter. Veg in would be a bit nasty I think.

BellaBear · 04/06/2007 18:51

The oil in the pan needs to be hot enough so that it is smoking.

binker · 04/06/2007 18:51

and mashed potato too and lots of gravy...yummy ! I like thin sausages in it rather than big fat ones !

BellaBear · 04/06/2007 18:52

I think it tastes a whole lot better if some of the oil is from the sausages, if that is your concern?

binker · 04/06/2007 18:52

oh dear, now I've got to have some toad....

jellyjelly · 04/06/2007 18:59

Well i made yorkishires with the same batter and they tasted nice but very greasy. i did drain them but could still taste it.

Do you ever chop up the sausages? as its for kids.

OP posts:
BellaBear · 04/06/2007 19:02

I've never chopped up the sausages but I can't see why it wouldn't work?

binker · 05/06/2007 11:20

maybe they (the yorkshires) were greasy because they might not've been cooked long enough to brown and crisp and dry out a bit ? Cut up sausages should work fine I reckon. Let us know how it goes !

jellyjelly · 05/06/2007 17:17

WELL I AM cooking it now for the boys and i stuck the oil into smoke whilst the oven was warming fine. Then i thought i would stick in the batter on to cook for a bit then stick the sausages - big mistake the batter sealed on the top so i tried to stick the sausages on but they are just lying on the top

Will try harder next time and make more batter.

OP posts:
BellaBear · 05/06/2007 17:20

oh dear! You HAVE to pour the batter ON TO the sausages!

Lilymaid · 05/06/2007 17:29

OK for next time, follow this plan:

  1. Heat oven
  2. When oven is at right heat, put in roasting pan and oil/fat
  3. When pan and oil are hot, add sausages
  4. Immediately make batter (don't keep it overnight - I don't think it will work properly)
  5. When sausages are browned on one side, turn and add batter.
  6. Allow to cook until batter is well risen and browned around edges.
  7. Serve.
  8. Curse me if it doesn't come out right.

I brown the sausages in the grill.
Have never heated the pan and mine is always delish!

Add grated cheese to the batter mix before pouring it over the sausages. Yummy! Toads in cheesy holes.

binker · 05/06/2007 18:06

ooer tortoise !

jellyjelly · 05/06/2007 18:42

Well one of them ate it but was a bit sceptical but dont know what foods he eats now as i havetn had him for ages.

My son said mmmmm which is such a result and ate some of all of it and i ate the rest and i thought it was yummy and will make it again but might give them less.

All in all a success but will pour batter onto sausages not sausages onto batter.

Am still getting into the simple cooking lark normally i am a one pot wonder.
