Really want to get started with making a sour dough starter. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good recipe /cook book please?

Thank you

There are a lot of 'artisan' bread makers out there who have their own highly rated books, but I actually prefer the first book from James Morton (from GBBO) because he talks about how you fit bread making into your life, not the other way round.

Starter recipes are all over the internet. Just avoid any that use anything other than flour and water (ie grapes, apple etc, Paul Hollywood v bad for this) as it will create an unstable starter. Also use filtered water or water that you've left in an uncovered jug overnight to let chlorine in tap water evaporate, and organic unbleached flour as it's more 'alive' IYKWIM.

Ha, I was going to say use the Paul Hollywood recipe! Worked for me (tho I did have to add extra flour when I refreshed the starter, iirc).

There is an American group called simply Bread Baking on FB. One of the admin, MaryAnne Latanzio Lesko has the easiest most effective sourdough starter recipes I have ever seen. Never fails!

Or you can opt out and buy a dehydrated starter on Amazon. Pricey in comparison but they have the ability to last for literally centuries if looked after.

Sorry, my first post wasn't the most helpful! You wanted links. I've got a rather good article on sourdough in the Times that I refer to a bit, but it's behind the paywall. It's an extract from a book called Sourdough by Casper Andre Lugg and Martin something (article cuts his name off).

However a really good resource is Vanessa Kimbell's website - she's well regarded in baking circles, she runs a sourdough school and seems to know her stuff pretty well. Her starter recipe is here - Starter

She also has a good basic sourdough bread recipe here - Basic loaf

She used to do a bit of writing for Bakery Bits which is how I discovered her.
