Why would one give an 8month old milkshake?

As standard I mean?

I just thought it was an odd thing to do.

He's a very, very large 8 month old and loves his food, has a very healthy appetite so why would one pour strawberry sauce into some formula and say 'it's time for your strawberry milk' and then call him 'fatty' all afternoon????!!!

You need to eat lots of strawberries and cream WB....

So this woman is feeding her baby loads of sweet stuff and posters on this thread agree that's wrong, but if TC had posted a thread to say her MIL was doing exactly the same thing, she'd have been told to "get a life" and stop being so PFB.

My offer of a red pepper strip made your skin creep! sorry but pmsl.

And actually her response to me offering the red pepper strip that was on my plate was "Oh what a good idea, why didn't I think of tha? Thank you" and then minutes later 'ohh he loves that red pepper doesn't he'. So I don't think I was offensive at all. I think she was pleased. I'd go out of my way to try and help someone but do my absolute utmost not to be patronising or smug, it's no in my nature and I'm acutley aware how easy it would be to offend someone or come across as 'I know so much more / better'. When new advice is offered to me with my girls, if it's said in a plesant way, I embrace it. Parenthood is a steep learning curve for us all.

Oh and the reason I said tge bit about him not filling up to much on the bread btw was becasue she had siad 'he's not going to eat his tea at this rate'. I was so far from being patronising and she took it as a helpful, plesant suggestion.

And Gibbon, I'm not judging her, I've met her 4 or 5 times and I think she's lovely and a great mum, I just don't understand why she'd give him strawberry stuff in his formula milk at 8 months old. I don't think there is anything wrong with not gettign this.

if you are not a food orientated person, and perhaps don;t cook much, or understand nutrition, then maybe you wouldn't think of giving your child some veg to munch on rather than bread and strawberry milk.... i think there are ways of saying and offering advice ,without it being patronising....and i;m sure that;s what TC did...

why would you think to put strawberry sauce in formula though ?

ThomCat · 03/06/2007 12:37

She seems so foody though. Her bread is linseed bread, she has soya milk herself, our food was lovely, we had pumpkin seeds all over our lovely salads, courgettes in our cous cous, roasted red pepper stips etc. That's why I don't get why you would think to put strawberry juice in a babies formula milk!

hmm also a bit worrying is what it would do to the poor child's teeth!
btw if a mil did that to a pfb or any young baby i think it would be judged pretty harshly as the baby is only 8months old. its not like offering a few non-organic raisins, or choc bar at 3yrs old.
oh and 8 months old do tend to look big anyway dont they? its that combination of being a big version of a baby and not crawling yet

bettybobo · 03/06/2007 12:45

o non-organic raisins was jesting btw

welliemum · 03/06/2007 12:56

You think it's OK to give non-organic raisins????

No, I really think that The Wisdom of MN is that grandparents can feed children toxic waste on toast and anyone who feels uncomfortable with this is being obsessive and neurotic and nasty.

(Not an issue for me personally - grandparents have roughly the same idea of good food so we're lucky there I think)
