Recalling the unusual foods your kids love thread, today my daughter ate:

Jellied eels
Black pudding with her pickled herring and cheese salad
Snack of olives - black and green
Sardines for dinner along with squid, mussel and prawn stir fry.

She is soooo into fish and begs me for it all day long. Is this normal and diet wise, is it okay?

Wowee, how old is she? Young enough to believe that mermaids come up to land occasionally for carrot sticks?
Always wanted to try jellied eels, there's a v old fashioned eel and mash shop in Islington I've never had the guts to go in.

Lucky newlife's dd - can I come and live with you and share your yummy fish? (I don't eat much as am only 6" high etc etc)

newlifenewname · 01/06/2007 21:20

lol Kathy 6"..of course!

Yes, BofD, at 7 she certainly has a healthy belief in mermaids. I only got as far as licking her fork when she offered me a bit of eel to try. I said it was too, ummmm, salty for me. It wasn't, but I couldn't bear the jelly. The eel looked good though.

Must say Morrisons is coming up trumps on the fish front. The fishmonger took me round the back of his counter (ooer) to show me how to prepare squid which was quite enlightening. Even ds 5 is getting into the squid thing.

I'm after whitebait now so we can deep fry them and crunch their teeny heads off - the boys should like that. I love whitebait.

#My mum used to pay us 10p per whitebait and i never got any money after the first 10p but my sister got loads. Just thought i would share that

My son loves fish. When he was 4 or 5 his idea of a treat would have been the plate de mer from tesco which crab legs and mussels etc

Never forget his little face when we were in France when he was served up with a big bowl of moules marinerer.

He is 11 now and still asks for crabs legs if we are at the big supermarket with a fishmonger.

DS2 had octopus for dinner last night.

DH had to cook it for him as I am far too queasy.
They tease me by saying how tasty the tentacles are.

lilolilmanchester · 02/06/2007 18:15

My kids like all sorts of stuff, but even my very adventurous DS gagged on oysters last summer. I don't like them much either. Reminds me of swallowing something I'd rather not mention on a food thread

NAB3 · 02/06/2007 18:16

A friend of mine told me you need to watch the intake of fish in young girls. Something to do with hormones I think.

Mercy · 02/06/2007 18:18

Good grief!

btw, your dd shouldn't have more than 2 portions of oily fish per week (4 for boys).

Mercy · 02/06/2007 18:20

ooops, x posted with NAB!

newlifenewname · 02/06/2007 20:55

Thanks NAB and Mercy. I was hoping that if something like this were the case then somebody would point it out onthis thread.

I know that those on a high fish diet tend not to get cancers and suchlike but something nagged at me that fish daily might not be a good idea given the choice.

I remember from pregnancy that one shouldn't have too much tuna, so that applies to all oily fish, yes? And the hormone thing to ALL fish?

Thanks
