Easy quick fun recipes for making with small children

It would be really nice if people could post their ideas here (largely so that I can filch them) - anything which is reasonably quick/manageable and fairly cheap, which is fun to do, involves tasks small children can manage with supervision, and preferably produces an end result most children will be happy to try.

Obvious ones, to start: chocolate crispy cakes, tiffin, home-made pizzas, pizza omelette/frittata, French toast, little cakes, brownies, spring rolls, little filo parcels with stuff in.......

Well we made strawberry jam this morning. I hulled them and DS chopped the larger ones with a blunt knife. They are now sitting in a pot of sugar waiting for the next stage which he won't really be able to get involved with, but he already told a neighbour this morning that he has made jam today.

that's a good one, and then they could make jam tarts/little jam puddings or something with the results!! I made jam yesterday, but didn't involve the kids, I might do next time.

Rainy day biscuits.

Rich tea bisucuits.
Different coloured bowls of icing sugar.
Dolly mixtures, sprinkles, red laces.

They can make faces, and use the laces to do long hair or chop them up to make spiky hair.

Then you put them on the side to set. They can have one with their supper.
Then silly Mummy left them out over night and we had to give them to the dog/ or put them in the bin. That way the sugar rush is kept to a minimum. But they have a great time.

Is that what you say when you've scoffed DS' biscuits, Bree?

BreeVanDerCamp · 01/06/2007 14:07

No seriously they go straight in the bin or the dog.

Ceolas · 01/06/2007 14:09

We don't have a dog. Just DH!

We have success with make your own pizzas. They will eat a lot more veg if they have chopped it up and sprinkled it on a pizza for some reason. Just use Mini pizza bases, tomato sauce, cheese and various veggies.

Scones? Mine used to love making them, from rubbing the fat into the flour to rolling and cutting.
Add cheese or sultanas or just plain....

Jelly.

It takes my 3yo about 40 minutes to make packet jelly and she's so proud of it.

ROFL at jelly

WHY didn't I think of that?!?!?

She's "improved" on the recipe too, when I'm distracted she adds all sorts of things. Milk and coffee for instance. Today we had distinctly cloudy jelly for lunch.

Trifle
Break cheap jam roll sponge into little chunks
Mush up 4 handfulls of raspberries into slop and pour over jam roll
whip up big bowl of cream until fim. Add half of bowl to pot of fresh custard and stir.
Pour custard/ cream mix over sponge and raspberry slop
Finish off with the rest of the cream and decorate with bits of fresh fruit chopped by inexpert chubby fingers.
