Feijoa - impossible to source in UK?

I lived in New Zealand for quite a few years and one of the things I miss the most are Feijoas, I’ve never ever seen one in the UK, but maybe they are known by a different name??

If you ever see one snap them up - they are absolutely delish!

Unfortunately I have never heard of them over this side of the world. I swear I'd fly over from Dublin if I thought I could get them in the UK.

You can grow them here, but only down south...

Are they called something else? They look vaguely familiar but the name isn't.

I mentioned it to a greengrocer a few months ago and he seemed certain you could get them, I may have been slightly tipsy and have his number saved as ‘feijoa guy’. Not sure I’m ready for that level of commitment yet!

This is going back a few years but I was at the farmers market in Temple Bar in Dublin with a kiwi friend and the veggie stall had them. My friend almost fell over herself buying them!

Do they taste like guava?

You can buy them in the Selfridges food hall at certain times of the year, for a ridiculous price (it's painful when you know people give bags away for free back in NZ!)

We get them in Spain, in the autumn. They come from Georgia.

Sometimes heard of them being called guavasteen (NOT guava).

AdaColeman To me they taste a bit like minty apples.

Nothing like guava then, which I think has a very mild strawberry/watermelon flavour but a gritty texture.
