Help. My veg box is a bit 'real'!

Just tried a new supplier and I've got a couple of suprises in there that I have no idea what to do with!

  • Radish

  • Mixed bean sprouts (aduki, mung, lentil, etc)

  • Also the ubiquitous cauliflour, and the kids are getting sick to death of my cauliflour cheese.

If anyone can point me in the direction of some good meal/snack ideas I'd be really grateful!

Tks.

I had to give up on our box scheme because of the huge varieties of cabbage every week. And various takes on the swede.

I was creative for about a month, then couldn't take it anymore.

We made the mistake of doing it as a New Year resolution - months of weird leafy stuff & odd knobbly bits.

Fortunately dd was weaning at the time - everything either went in curry (I admit I will boak if ever again faced with Kohlrabi Jalfrezi) or was pureed for madam. Who will now eat ANYTHING, unlike her elder brother...

Anyway, it's much better now - lots of lovely stuff for salads & stir fries.

Would you Abel & Cole customers out there recommend them? Are they more expensive?

They let you add/remove particular veg don't they?

(Batch cooking is a pain in the ass but saves so much time in the long run, so I quite like being 'forced' to do it by these boxes...)

Sorry, don't know about the box yet, delivery on Wednesday ! Quite excited about it, it'll be like Christmas every week wondering what presents we've got . Have got to say how professional they seem to be, only ordered it yesterday afternoon and today got brochure and welcome letter in the post ! Will update on Wednesday how it is.....

sohappyicouldcry · 06/06/2007 10:40

Well, it's arrived !!

We ordered the baby organic box so I am forced to make real food for dd. We got pears (3), Broccoli (lovely looking big bunch/floret), Carrots (about 4 covered in dry soil still), Courgettes (2, not sure what I'm goign to do with those), Bananas (4 small ones), Jersey Royal potatoes(lovely little ones, covered in soil) , Mango (not sure what to do with it really).

I'm okay with what to with most of this, but a bit stuck with the mango, courgette and pears (Apart from raw fruit).

Any ideas ??

Any recipes for using a mixture of some of these things ??

P.S; dd is almost 11 months and eats everything except peas !!! (sieves them out).

florenceuk · 06/06/2007 10:47

Just eat the mango and pears (unless you fancy stewed pears). The courgettes can go into a tomato sauce (fry up with a pepper, onions and garlic and add canned tomatoes) or a stir fry, or gently fried and added to mac cheese - grated if you are lazy.

Peachy · 06/06/2007 10:48

Mango fool is lovely- puree mango, half and half custard and whipped cream, sweeten to taste if necessary.

Courgetes- nota fan of those, Nigella has a courgette cale recipe I can dig out for you, or MIL serves them in cheese sauce. You can also make courgette bread.

Pears in chocolate sauce- yummmmmmm

or for adults, pear walnut and stilton salad

We've been doing boxes (Riverford) for going on a year now and we love them, also love the facts that DS1's food aceptance has widened from wertehrs, chicken skin and green pepeprs (and cabbage) to pretty much anything- the arrival of the box has becme such an event it seems to have over ridden the ASD thing!

We're having a fruit and salad box over the summer, easier to use I think. And ordered basil for home made pesto.

sohappyicouldcry · 06/06/2007 11:08

Thanks folks, thought there must have been some way of using the courgettes other than frying in garlic.... tomato sauce is much healthier for dd !! (maybe not for us adults though!)

purplemonkeydishwasher · 06/06/2007 11:10

courgette cake!

this is yummy but does involve frying your courgettes.

Cook couscous with stock, stir in a tin chickpeas.

Fry sliced courgette, cherry toms and griddle some halloumi.

Serve a pile of couscous/chickpea topped with veg and halloumi.

Dress with an olive oil and lime juice dressing with loads and loads of garlic and chopped mint (several cloves, and handfuls).

Pinkveto · 06/06/2007 11:15

and mango is great with proscuttio/serrano ham as a starter, instead of melon.
