Freezing runner beans

I have a glut of runner beans. This has happened the last few years too and I froze a lot. They tasted disgusting, like school dinner beans (I don't like commercial frozen beans either).

However, I used to successfully freeze them years ago, so I don't know where I'm going wrong. I've tried blanching/not blanching, cutting fine/cutting chunky, trying them after only a month - always the same.

Has anybody got any advice?

Several years ago my Father bottled some. It was something they used to do in the war and he experimented again 65 years later. They were wonderful. It requires a lot of salt (to preserve them) but when you use them you rinse in fresh water and then boil up without salt and they are sooooooo tasty! You will need some big Kilner Jars though.
It was great because they also didn't go in the freezer.....leaving more room for other things.

Is it the same kind of runner beans? I think some freeze better than others.

I took to brewing up big batches of them sauteed with shallots, tomatoes and water or stock and freezing them like that - which gave a texture I liked better.

If I have chucked in freezer then I'll usually use them in something rather than just as they are.

Two really good suggestions, thank you. The recipe looks good.
