Healthy Breakfast - Help!

Really need to sort myself out with a healthy breakfast routine.

On a weekday, I'm usually eating a combination of a cheese roll, some kind of pastry, yoghurt, fruit (either banana or apple), occasionally a bit of cereal. At weekends often a crumpet or cream cheese bagel and nothing else. Relying on too much sugar and refined carbs.

I don't like cow's milk or eggs, so makes things rather restrictive.

What could I have that could be better for me. I need something I can eat at work rather than at home, as I leave the house very early.

Any suggestions? Any option for porridge without cow's milk?

Use almond milk as an alternative. Works well with most healthy cereal like cornflakes, weetabix and oats.

Thanks @Monday55

Are cornflakes/weetabix both classed as healthy? May prefer these to porridge.

I thought all cereals were bad?!

You need to buy pure cornflakes not the flavoured stuff same with weetabix.

starfish8 · 23/07/2018 15:11

Ahh yes I know that - no crunchy nut cornflakes!

Will try weetabix and almond milk I think.

We have a fruit smoothie most mornings in this house (just loads of fruit whizzed up) - couple of your five a day in an easy-to-drink format that fills you up for most of the morning!

starfish8 · 23/07/2018 16:08

Thanks. I tried that with a banana and some porridge oats in it too, it always leaves me hungry though - weird!

Do you avocado? Mashed on toasted pita is really filling.
Can you prep anything at work? Beans on toast has sugar but probably less than your pastry.
I make a savoury flapjack which could be eaten for breakfast.

VelociraptorRex · 23/07/2018 17:27

Savoury flapjack sounds interesting, what do you put in it?

thedevilinablackdress · 23/07/2018 17:32

You can make porridge with water or non-dairy milks.

Overnight oats is another good. Loads of recipies about. Often with yogurt but you could use non dairy yog or I use chia seeds to bulk up a bit along with oat or soya milk.

Scrambled tofu at the weekend.

Thanks for the evening updates.

Avocado on pitta sounds delicious!

I can buy beans on toast at work at least (we have a canteen) or could heat up a can of reduced fat beans.

Will look up overnight oats too!

Yes, flapjack recipe please!

Here's a recipe for savoury flapjacks www.british-leeks.co.uk/recipe/leek-cheese-flapjacks.php
Recently I've been having rice cakes with peanut butter, topped with sliced banana.

Bacon medallions in a slice of wholemeal bread or sandwich thin

I second overnight oats - also known as Bircher muesli. Soak porridge oats in apple juice overnight, then eat with a spoonful of yoghurt and some chopped apple or defrosted frozen berries and some honey drizzled over. If you make up the oats in a Tupperware and add the other ingredients just before you go, it’s easy to take with you.

Another alternative is to whip up a batch of bran muffins at the weekend and pop in the freezer - get one out before going to bed and it’s ready to eat in the morning. Particularly good if you’re eating on the go.

I tend to avoid fruit and smoothies in the morning - they don’t fill me up.

RochelleGoyle · 24/07/2018 14:56

Heinz beans (for example) have 0.2g fat per 100g, so you really don't need to worry about finding reduced fat ones. They are naturally low fat.

aperolspritzplease · 24/07/2018 14:57

Greek yogurt

1frenchfoodie · 24/07/2018 20:35

Dairy free yoghurt mixed with a couple of tablespoons of oats, a tablespoon of nut butter and a handful of chopped fruit works for me. Bit like the bircher idea above. We sometimes make the night before, sometimes 20 mins or so before eating. If you vary the type of nut butter and fruit it doesn’t get too samey.

SquishySquirmy · 24/07/2018 20:41

I make porridge with hot water because I don't like the taste of it with milk! It's quicker too because I just pour boiling water on top of some oats in a bowl then stir. I then make it less healthy by adding jam or lemon curd.

starfish8 · 25/07/2018 13:59

I was thinking more about the sugar content @rochellegoyle

Ah, OK. Sorry you said fat, so I referred to that.

Shewhomustbeobeyed1 · 27/07/2018 16:44

We make up a big tub of muesli - rolled oats, raisins/saltanas, almond slivers and cinnamon. Measure out a small amount and mix with water to make burcher muesli and add some fresh berries. Healthy and filling until way into the day.

JingsMahBucket · 28/07/2018 07:00

@Ricekrispie22 thanks for that recipe. I have everything in the house for it. I’m going to try making it this weekend now that the weather has finally cooled down a bit where we are.
