Hi. Little fella is having a few fingers of toast with this fruit and porridge in the morning. Can I put a teency bit of vegemite on the toast. Hubby says it's too salty. For the small amount on and the small amount that actually goes down, does it really matter??

well kiwicath i have been giving dd marmite (good to hear you have your supplies ) my sister has been giving it to her dd who is the same age
it is the only thing with salt in it she gets - and she seems ok so far

pilotswife · 15/08/2004 07:15

Vegemite is fine to give babies and it's a great source of vitamin B for big babies who have managed to deplete theirs!

Ghosty · 15/08/2004 07:19

Everyone I know in NZ gives vegemite to their babies from 6 months ....
I haven't yet given any to DD but I am contemplating it too kiwicath ....

kiwicath · 15/08/2004 07:25

Cheers guys. A friend bought over 4 big jars which should last us oh ..... a month!!! Telling my British hubby that vegemite is not just a treat but a BIRTH RIGHT for kiwikids and that if he's going to hold his own when we finally go back, he needs to start now

But you can buy vegemite in the uk, kiwicath! Why do you have to have someone bring it over for you??
No, not yet booked the ticket .... but will do this week

Papillon · 15/08/2004 07:37

is is Sanitarium though Ghosty...?
None here in CH except the English marmite which is not quite wot I was brought up on.

i love marmite and apple on toast!!

kiwicath · 15/08/2004 07:42

I live in Egypt where they can't even say vegemite let alone comprehend what it is. The stuff we have now is from the UK which is Kraft, made in Auz - beggers can't be choosers .

Ooooh Paps, the Kiwi marmite is made by sanitarium and it is horrible ... eeeeeewwwwww
Forgot that you guys live in funny foreign places ....
They do have English Marmite in NZ but it is called 'Our Mate' and is in teeny weeny little pots and costs a fortune ...
Vegemite is my spread of choice though, even if I am in the UK ...
Can't believe I am being soooo boring and discussing the merits of different types of yeast spread ... really need to get out more!

Papillon · 15/08/2004 08:14

Its tradition to talk about yeast spreads in kiwiland Ghosty!! And you can't get out more.. your a mother remember so stuck here talking to us lot
Everyone has there preference marmite or vegemite. I offerred some of my treasured stash to a mate the other day and she said "oh no, i like vegemite"

I LOVE MARMITE

if you're worried about the salt content, you can get a reduced salt yeast spread called natex from holland and barrett. it's really nice

Papillon · 16/08/2004 12:41

kiwicath did you never get Sunday bread on a ...Sunday. Mum would buy one after church - fresh, white and I loved it
I can't remember sunday school, but I remember Granny giving us chewing gum in church and then sunday bread. My worship revolved around food it seems!

kiwicath · 16/08/2004 15:56

Pap, I grew up in the whopps so no fresh bread for us unless mum baked it. Actually, when you mentioned it was Sunday, I was shocked . I truly thought it was only Friday. Days of the week mean nothing to us over here as life revolves around the tourists who (bless them) visit us 24 - 7 - 365. I could, however, tell you what phase of the moon we are in at any one time and when high/low tides will be. Sad but true - GREAT LIFE THOUGH!!

kiwicath - mine have had vegemite from about 5 months and are fine. Have to have it every day, or feel cheated. My huge jar is nearly running out, so I will have to speak nicely to kiwi friends to ship me some over. Jars you buy here are so small they don't last a minute in our house.

eidsvold · 18/08/2004 01:12

at that age it is fine - our dd ( uk born but aussie citizen and now resident) loves nothing more than a vegemite sandwich for lunch!! and on toast in the morning......

you can buy it in the UK - we used to buy ours in tesco... only smaller jars mind you - not the huge ones you can get over here....

fresh bread... love the local hot bread shop - makes the best bread... nothing like it....

eidsvold · 18/08/2004 01:14

kiwi - your dh does not like vegemite?!?! Told english dh before we were married he had to like eating it.... luckily for me he loves it too....

eidsvold · 18/08/2004 01:15

sorry can't get head straight this morning - did no one's mum tell them how they used to put a little bit of vegemite in warm water for a drink?!?! Have not done that for dd - can't imagine what it would taste like...
