Fesh yeast at Tesco

Why has tesco stopped giving out 60g of fresh yeast free? This was enough for 3 one-pound loaves, now you can only make one!
After a protest by yeast freaks,(shades of Greenham common) who were told that policy would not allow us to buy what we wanted, the duty manager gave in, and we got our 60 grams, but why the change in policy? It involves pence, for goodness sake!

Ohh, didn't know they gave any away free... how do you get it?

MrsSoupdragon · 25/05/2007 12:21

Is it because they're a business not a charity?

PinkTulips · 25/05/2007 12:23

free yeast? wtf?

never got any free yeast... have i been the only mug buying my yeast?

why would they give free yeast?

You ask for the yeast at the bakery. All our local Tescos with a bakery give it away. The assumption presumably is that you buy their bread flour. I have, in the past persuaded Asda to give it away. Why give it away? My guess is that it is so cheap and so few of us ask for it, it is unprofitable to package and sell it. All I ask for is that I can continue to get 6 grams of fresh yeast and keep wrinklygrandad happily kneading his dough each week.

Thanks wrinklygran, might try that next time I'm in there, although my breadmachine stopped working yesterday so we won't be baking for a bit (too busy with toddler to make it by hand!)

I'm often asked about my bread machine, it's wriklygrandad, who I taught to make bread by hand before I went into hospital for a hysterectomy. (I also provided instructions on how to find and operate the dishwasher and washing machine and how to differentiate between them). The technique is to insist that the kneading processs is essential (which it is), and that men are SO much better at doing it, and bob's your uncle. You just have to put up with discussions about rising times and the quality of the bread flour. We make 4 large loaves at a time, and freeze 2/3 at a time.
As to the problem with Tescos and the new policy of only giving away 20 grams, I asked for some at our local store on Sunday, and mentioned a big family do, and was given 250 grams, what a farce!
