Oven chips

Hiya everyone

Oven chips - are they an acceptable finger food at 11 months old?

Any other suggestions for finger food for a baby with just 2 front teeth would be great!

Tx

Monnie, I would say yes, as long as you cool them a bit before you give them!

Other finger foods - slices of apple are good, and pieces of banana. Also toast (pref wholemeal, but white OK too, butter not necessary.)

Also things like bits of cucumber, cooked green beans, slices of pepper...

Can't think of much else just now (my baby is 9!!!)

Monnie, from what I remember dd used to love banana chopped up, rice cakes and bread sticks with philadelphia cheese, pear chopped up and melon. Never very good with apple as she used to choke a bit. Pasta is another food she loved at that age with a bit of pesto sauce.

Hi Monnie

Glad you posted this query. I've been giving oven chips to my dd (just 10mths) for about two weeks now - she loves them :-) Have also tried sliced apple and ripe banana. She loves her toast with butter and bovril (breakfast, lunch and tea) as it's something she can feed herself. Haven't tried cucumber or green beans, but will give them a go. Any other ideas gratefully received. BTW dd doesn't have any teeth at all yet - but her gums are strong!

Bozza · 20/07/2002 20:25

Besides most of the ideas mentioned DS enjoyed raisins, grapes (chooped in half), frozen peas (quite challenging!) and brocolli at that age.

Bozza · 20/07/2002 22:01

Garlic bread? Baby corn?

Deborahf · 21/07/2002 11:51

My dd has just started really trying to feed herself - it's such fun and we have lovely newly decorated walls The main thing is that she's trying. I will give the grapes a go at lunch today. Bozza - frozen peas, don't they just swallow them?

LittleBeth · 22/07/2002 00:26

My dd is 11 months old, and is a voracious eater. She now has ten teeth! Nursing is becoming very interesting. Here are some of her favorite finger foods:

-Sliced peaches and apricots
-Raspberries and blueberries
-Watermelon (seedless)
-Wholegrain crackers with cream cheese
-Cooked beans, plain. Avoid chick peas, too hard.
-Diced baked tofu
-Almost any steamed vegetable
-Grated cheddar cheese (at six months you might wait a while for dairy though...)
-Gardenburgers (are these available in the UK?)
-Rice cakes and toast
-Cheerios!

Have fun!

Those baby carrots lightly cooked go down a treat, I buy them whenever they're on sale. The sluglet adores asparagus, rice cakes, toast with marmite, green beans and baby corn.

slices of ripe avocado

oxocube · 22/07/2002 17:09

My d.s. (9 months) loves most the things previously listed, except for tofu which I haven't tried and pesto, but tried that a few months ago and will try again soon. Also loves chips! His current fave, tho, is wholemeal toast spread with a mixture of boursin or philly cheese and avocado. Isn't this one of the best bits I love to see kids enjoying new foods! Should also add that strangely, lots of mummy's favourites are now served up as kiddy tea

Monnie · 23/07/2002 20:03

Tx everyone for the suggestions.

I agree, Oxocube, I am so excited about this finger food stage, it's quite sad really (lol).

But I'm also a little cautious as I am not sure what they can have. Can they have sausages?

I've heard that you can buy 'baby' sausages.

Can they try ketchup?

I've yet to find concrete advice as to what they can try when past 9 months old....

Don't know about 'baby' sausages - but my ds always finds the skinless variety much easier to eat

oxocube · 23/07/2002 21:07

Monnie, there are many mums on this site who are much more 'in-the-know' about what is good for babies to eat, but basically, I can honestly say that most foods I would eat myself, I would confidently give to my d.s (9 months). Apart from raw meat (carpaccio etc), I am now trying him on everything I eat and, to date, we have not had many refusals!! Sausages sound good, but like everything, in moderation. My son eats all veggies, all fruit, all cheeses, olives, sucks on prawns (although he usually drops them or they fall out of his mouth!), burritos, you name it! I feel, having considered all advice (much of it from Mumsnet!) that most things are okay in moderation.

By the way, have refrained from trying him with G&Ts (except via breast milk): they remain the exclusive property of mummy

sorry everyone for double post. My computer is so bloody slow that I seem to spend ages trying to work out if it has died mid-post and invariably end up sending the same message twice

Bozza · 24/07/2002 10:40

I agree with Oxocube about trying a wide variety of foods. I am working on the principle that when DS gets to the fussy stage the wider range of foods he has to reject the more we will be left with that he will accept! I hope that makes sense. At 17 mo he is now starting to look suspiciously at new foods sometimes so introduce what you can at the stage when your child is fairly accepting.

Monnie · 24/07/2002 19:50

Tx again, Ladies.

Will try skinless sausages, MABS.

I agree about G&Ts, Oxocube, although white wine is my drink of choice, but poor DS doesn't even get that through breast milk. He's stuck with SMA Progress, I'm afraid!
