Chinese cooking - beginners cookbook

My dd loves chinese food. I make stir fries - chicken, pork and that's about it.

Can anyone recommend a fairly basic chinese cookery book that doesn't need loads of extra ingredients. We have sesame seed oil, sesame seeds, various soy sauces and rice wine. Am happy to buy more but it needs to be able to be sourced from most supermarkets.

I am going out in a minute so will not be able to reply but will check in later.

Thank you

Fuschia Dunlop Every Grain of Rice. Good homestyle Chinese cooking that doesn't expect you to have an army of restaurant staff. There are recipes which expect some extra ingredients but nothing you can't easily get online, most recipes just ginger, garlic, dark/light soy, rice wine, vinegar that kind of thing.

Gok wans first book is really good and cheap on amazon. Some of our favourite recipes come from there.

Most of Ching he Huang's books are really good and use lots of the same ingredients. Chinese Food Made Easy is a good place to start.

Thank you for your replies - I had a look in waterstones while i was out and they had very few chinese cookbooks.

I will have a look at these on Amazon this evening.

Thank you

Ken Hom is good if you can get a second hand one.

I really like Fuschia Dunlop’s every grain of rice too.

Another recommendation for Every Grain of Rice, it's a great cookbook. If you search old threads for Cookery Book Club we reviewed some of the recipes one month. The red braised pork is a family favourite.

Check if your local Chinese mini mart stocks frozen pre cooked Chinese roast duck and char siu. And Chinese greens.

For fish dishes, steam ginger spring onion and garlic with soy. That's very very Chinese. Tbh ginger spring onion and garlic on every meal tastes Chinese.

Add rice and you're set for a simple Chinese meal!

Also if any recipes ask for Chinese shaoxing wine. I sub for Harvey's sherry.
