we mainly do fruit puree [dd1 LOVES the ella's kitchen fruit puree thingys], but also started making soya fromage frais for a change [sorry more soya!]. How about dairy free pancakes, fruit crumbles, home make dairy free muffins? Can give you all the recipes if you like as we are a dairy allergic household!

by the way our allergy specialist says there is [in his professional opinion] no problem with soya and it has a very useful role in providing nutrients like calcium. Before he said that we were also not so keen on using it frequently

macmama73 · 20/05/2007 10:40

Hmm, I think this is where the professional opinions differ.

We were advised by pediatrician to cut out dairy products, nuts and fish for DD and he said that sometimes children have an "crossing over" of allergies and can then react to soya too. (Sorry, can't explain it any better, trying to translate what he said in German) He told us to avoid soya too, which I found very restricting. We gave her a lot of fruit / fruit purees which thankfully she likes.

BTW, we slowly reintroduced the ingredients he thought were causing the reaction and found that it was nuts that was to blame.

does he need pudding at all?
plain fruit not good enough?

mamado · 20/05/2007 10:45

you are right macmama, soya is a likely allergen too. I should have qualified what I said, in that both dd1 and dd2 have been allergy tested and since they do not react to soya, then its fine to use frequently. BTW the dietician said that some kids who are fine with soya yogurt may have more of a problem with soya deserts [the ready made ones] - for instance ezcema may worsen and she suspects its from the additives in them

Sorbet, goats milk yogurt based desserts, cakes/puddings/biscuits/muffins etc with milk/butter substituted for goats milk/margarine.

@Mamamdo
That is good to know, she seems to be alright at the moment. Both our kids love the soya desserts and the flavoured milk. I still buy them sometimes.

Our biggest problem is when she goes to visit my MIL, she gets much more sweeties and lots of juice. They don't seem to understand that she is ALLERGIC to these things, and it is not just that I am being a fussy mummy.

macmama73 · 20/05/2007 10:50

ohh, Sorbet, never thought of that. Good idea!

mamado · 20/05/2007 11:04

I agree macmama, relatives always seem to think you've made up the fact that they are allergic. My mum keeps saying about dd2 who has just been diagnosed as also allergic to peanuts and sesame that she WILL grow out of it and people with allergies can be normal
anyway, before i give recipes worleyhurley can your ds2 have eggs? that obviously makes it easier - but can also help if he can't as neither dd can!

juliepooley · 21/05/2007 18:39

Hi - (first time I have done this so bear with me on the abbreviations!). My DD2 is now nearly 3 and she is allergic to all dairy, eggs, nuts, peanuts and peas. She has soya milk, yogurts and the long life custard desserts. Tesco also sell an ice cream called Swedish Glace which is dairy and egg free for a special treat! I also have a few good cake and cookie recipes. Let mw know if you want them.

treacletart · 21/05/2007 18:44

How about jellies with lots of fruit in - we use frozen fruit in ours - works very well.

sar123 · 21/05/2007 18:51

You can make a rice pud using rice milk or oat milk - buy brown rice flakes and sweeten with dried fruit or molasses. Or use another grain like millet. There's a dessert called amazake that i sometimes buy my dd - it has some salt in it but otherwise it's ok in moderation - try www.goodnessdirect.co.uk, the one i buy is made by Clearspring. You can put fruit in it. There are some good vegan recipe books for children which will have some other ideas - maybe things like home made flapjacks as the odd treat???
