Cookery Club: June, Here comes the sun... and all things Grecian (and Hairy Bikers)

Welcome along!

Its June and our chosen regional food this month is Greek and Hairy Bikers for our author (hope thats okay - I picked one from your last post @whatareyoueatingNOW)

For anyone who is new - we have a regional theme and an author and posters cook new dishes, rediscovered dishes, old favourites that fall under the categories.

You can post a photo of your creation (it usually invokes in me a desire to copy that recipe!) and comment on how it turned out, whether the family appreciated it or if the dog ended up having an unexpected treat!.

My experience of Greek cooking is limited so I'm going to do some online searches today -any suggested chefs to look out for?

Looking forward to eating my way through June!

I've been making more Greek this week- Bouyordi www.finedininglovers.com/recipes/appetizer/feta-cheese-greek-bouyourdi/ as here, which has been my favourite Greek recipe so far. It's baked feta with tomatoes peppers chilli and oregano. The result is more than the sum of its parts and is a wonderful salty, sweet and savoury affair. We loved it.

I also made a kleftico, roughly following felicity cloakes the perfect kleftico recipe. Again very nice, but I still think it's better in the slow cooker.

oh that bouybourdi sounds delicious - I think I'll try that! Was the kleftico the massive long cook one from FC?

I think the Cypriot lamb dish you made is one I did earlier in the month - I made it for my sister last week and we both enjoyed it!

bruffin - what are/is kolokasi -is it with taro? I can get taro from a fab green grocers near me but not sure what to do with it...

Kolokasi is the cypriot name for taro.

Peel it like potato, dont wash it as it goes slimy.
I just cooked it in a couple of tins of tomatos, celery and pork in the slow cooker and lemon juice

What we had the bouryardi while watching the football on Sunday. It was delicious and just enough in all that heat.

Glad someone else tried it - we loved it.

What's on for July? Any suggestions?

Gerbo we do cucumber, tomato, feta, olives, coriander leaves (not chopped just picked), dried oregano and drizzle with lemon juice and olive oil. Sometimes bung in some other salad veg if I've got any.

I'd love to cover Spanish pantah, I have Catalonian family and love the food. June seems to have gone so fast! I may be cooking Greek Cypriot well into July as well as I haven't made half what I have booked marked -I'll look like a lump of feta by the time the summers over

another vote for Spain here! I am thinking of doing the bouryardi tomorrow night and may try and sneak some seafood past my seafood averse family too!

Any thoughts on cooks/chefs? Perhaps revisit HB in the future as we've not done much of them? I think HFW was also mentioned as a potential cook book option last time around. I'll also throw in Anna Jones (wearefood on twitter) - I have one of her books but have to admit don't cook that much from it....

I seem like such a sycophant agreeing with all suggestions so effusively, But, Anna jones is a great idea- particularly in the summer when vegetables are abundant and lighter dishes are what I fancy. I have her modern way to cook which I love (I used to have modern way to eat, which was even better, but it fell victim to the great soup explosion of 17)

I've been wanting to join you all for ages but haven't ever felt organised enough. However, I've just realised I cooked Spanokopita the other day and feel like that's my chance to elbow my way in here and say hi! Nice
to meet you and please may I join for July?! I cooked the Spanokopita recipe from Cranks Fast Food book. The best thing about it was that my 3 and 5 year olds loved cooking it with me. It was so easy - they just had to mix the spinach and feta, and then painting all the filo and wrapping it all up was a really great activity. So I'll be doing it again. Not that they ate it...

I have HFW and Anna Jones books so will look for some recipes to add to my meal plans. As for Spanish, I'm not sure I've ever made anything Spanish so will enjoy looking it all up even if I don't cook it. I'm really looking forward to seeing what everyone makes.

I set up a new thread here, and included the blog you've linked here pantah- that's a great one. I love Spanish food and vegetarian so very eager this month ( though I say that every month GrinBlush) I'll be making sangria and tapas today and posting later with my probably slightly tipsy reviews
