Cooking with frozen fish

This is terrible but I’ve never bought frozen fish as I didn’t realise that non battered/fish fingers were a thing. It’s much cheaper than fresh and I’m trying to cut back on meat and be more economical so keen to use it more but am not sure how to cook it - do you defrost or cook from frozen? Would love any recipes people could recommend! Thank you x

Fish fingers coated fish you usually cook from frozen, fish fillets like cod, haddock, salmon I usually defrost then cook as fresh say like in fish pie.

I cook from frozen. There are usually instructions on the pack. I find it's better value, fresher and more convenient to buy fish frozen. The frozen mackerel fillets are delicious with a soy sauce, honey and sesame seed marinade.

Cook from frozen. You can do anything with it but I find it better with something saucy as the texture tends to be a little dryer than fresh fish. I normally do fish pie or white fish Mallorcan style with a tomato sauce (lots of recipes online for this), both really easy and tasty.

I've started using a lot more frozen fish recently - mostly because we don't have a fishmongers that is within easy reach and I don't rate the quality of most supermarket fish - it never seems quite so fresh.

Generally, I have found that if you're picky about what you buy, it is very good - but I do suspect that you get what you pay for. That said, you're right, frozen usually works out cheaper, probably because the costs involved are lower and there is less wastage.

I mostly use frozen cod fillets, and although the packet says you can use from frozen, I never do. A lot of water comes out of them as they thaw, and I would rather throw that away than have it dilute my dish.

It absolutely isn't as good as fresh if all you want to do is grill it or bake and it serve it plainly, I wouldn't use it for that. But I find it very good indeed used in dishes. We're having it tonight in a tagine (so thanks for the reminder, because it is still in the freezerSmile ), there is a fab coconut curry I do, and I am plotting to try fish tacos soon - the only reason I haven't done yet is because I we're dieting and I can't find a low enough cal recipe.

I also have a packet of frozen mackerel fillets in the freezer, but I can't seem to get DH excited enough to try them - every time I plan them, he comes up with an excuse. But I will persist!

This is the tagine: www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipe/fish-tagine-saffron-almonds

And this is the curry: www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/fish-mappas. I put in a red pepper too, just for a bit of extra veg.

I'll also be following keenly for other ideas!

I buy a whole salmon at the fish counter when it’s on offer, get them to cut it into two side fillets and then I portion and freeze them at home individually. A big salmon for £10/12 and then get 18-20 good size fillets out of it. Best way to do it.

I defrost frozen fish before using, and drain off any water.

I cook from frozen.

Normally white fish in either a curry, Moroccan stew or with loads of chunky veg as a tray bake

Some really fab ideas thank you! Do you buy frozen fish from the supermarket or from one of those fish mongers that deliver frozen?

we use it quiet a bit had some lovely frozen haddock from Sainsburys I tend to use it fish pie/ Gratin ECT or sometimes oven bake it in a simple sauce if you just want to grill it ECT it's not as good as fresh but we really like it

I use frozen white fish in curries, tagines, Mediterranean style fish stew, that sort of thing. Also frozen smoked haddock in kedgeree.

Look on the packet as to whether it's better defrosted before cooking, it does vary.

Every so often I do a freezer sweep of the three or four odd different types of fish lurking there and make a fish pie. My lot prefer it topped with puff pastry.
