Does this sound like enough food for 80 guests?

Having an after party for DS christening next weekend. I'm absolutely hopeless when it comes to this sort of thing, and want to know if I've under catered. I figure if I get opinions now, I've still got time to get extra if I need to! We're doing canapes/sandwiches/cake buffet tables.

Cake;

48 carrot cake cupcakes
1 apricot tart
1 strawberry champagne tart
1 sponge cake
1 fruit cake
1 gluten free cake
1 tray bake

Canapes;

Allocated 2 per person, but again, not sure if this'll be enough?

Finger Sandwiches;

I'm thinking around 120 portions would be enough? Basic fillings like soft cheese/cucumber/fancy ham/ mustard, that sort of thing.

Opinions please? I just feel like we have too much cake!

Hard to say because it depends on the size of the cakes and the time of the party.
If this is lunch or timings mean people won’t have eaten first I think you need to up the savoury

MyDcAreMarvel · 18/05/2018 19:59

Doesn’t see anywhere near enough, just two canapés and one and a half sandwiches. Can you not do bowls of crisps , salad, quiche, sausage rolls etc as well.

Jonbb · 18/05/2018 20:02

No

Tobuyornot99 · 18/05/2018 20:03

No where near enough food for the people I know I'm afraid!

newcupcake · 18/05/2018 20:03

Defo not enough at all, is not even enough for 2 ginger sandwiches each , and one piece of cake , double it all at least !

Spam88 · 18/05/2018 20:05

How many is a portion of sandwiches? You'll probably find people have more than one cake, particularly with there being all different types, so you're probably going to need more. And yes - crisps, sausage rolls, etc etc.

whingeyarse · 18/05/2018 20:08

not nearly enough savoury stuff

AdaColeman · 18/05/2018 20:12

What time of day is it? If it's between meals, say 2pm to 4pm it might just be enough if you added crisps & nuts, but if it's later afternoon closer to 5pm then no where near enough, you need more of everything.

FusionChefGeoff · 18/05/2018 20:13

Not enough - can you add a large cheeseboard with baguettes and cold cuts to pad it out for not much effort?

Or how about a load of frozen / chilled pizzas just keep them coming out of the oven tapas style?!

MrsBartlettforthewin · 18/05/2018 20:13

I'd double everything, add more finger foods: crudités and dips, nice crisps, cheese board and crackers, etc. but then I'm none in my family to always over cater

myrtleWilson · 18/05/2018 20:38

it does seem a bit sweet heavy... Are you making or buying? I'm presuming you want just finger foods... Some other options

*hoi sin mini sausages
*vol au vents
*mini wraps alongside sandwiches
*quiche
*skewers (chicken/veg/halloumi etc)
*pizza slices
*asparagus wrapped in parma ham
*devilled eggs
*assorted breads/crisps/cheese straws
*cheese board
*charcuterie board

obviously not all of the above but some ideas. Best wishes for the Christening.

MadelineJapan · 18/05/2018 20:38

Thank you all for your honesty Smile it'll be 2pm ... with the sheer number of us all going to the same church for a change we've had to request a private service.

I'll definitely be bulking it out!

And making everything Myrtle Grin I like a challenge. Everything I've listed is either me, or what family want to contribute.

I've got some experience in catering - I reckon you've got about half what you will need. Allow at least 4 finger sandwiches per person and 4-6 canapés per person .

myrtleWilson · 18/05/2018 20:53

Aah - if you're making it all then scrap loads of my ideas - too fiddly!

How about a joint of ham cooked in coke - you can slice enough for people to get going and keep an eye on it as the after party progresses (love the idea of an after party - its like the oscars!!). Can be served with sliced baguette with pickles etc

Big bowl of potato salad (my preference is for gherkins and dill - I think more German style than a mayonnaise based one)

A really nice tortilla would work well for vegetarians - they can take a while to cook but are great warm or cold the next day.

Maybe a tray of chicken drumsticks in a sticky orange and honey sauce?

Big plate of roasted vegetables (and halloumi) with a side of a herb sauce for people to drizzle over?

SomeAreMoreEqualThanOthers · 18/05/2018 20:56

Nowhere near enough, 2 canapes wouldn't even touch the sides, and what if everyone wants a cupcake?

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 18/05/2018 20:57

If it’s at 2pm people will be expecting enough to consider it lunch. You need waaaaaay more food.

purplecorkheart · 18/05/2018 22:10

Forget about canapes (too much work). Order a couple of boned and rolled turkeys from the butcher and roast and slice them. Make up coleslaw, potato salad and hit the bakery section of your local supermarket that morning. I would have a bun for each person.

Notthatwomanagain · 18/05/2018 22:19

Scrap the canapés
THey are fiddly and time consuming to make and don’t fill people up nor go well with other things

Double the sarnies and make some more interesting like baguettes
Add crisps, crudités and dips

Add a big side of turkey and a big ham. And some cocktail sausages or sausage rolls. Filling and easy to do in advance.

Cheeses with grapes.

Don’t bother with coleslaws etc- people don’t eat them and they need forks etc. Stick to largely finger food.
