Natural 'live' yoghurt - is it OK for babies

I went looking for yoghurt to mix with fruit for my 7 1/2 month ds and only seemed to see low fat yoghurt. the only wholemilk one i could see was bio 'live' yoghurt - but is this ok for babies??

Also glad to see that other people have the same problems as me feeding their little ones - only wanting to eat sweet stuff and crying before they even see the food you are trying to give them.

i have been feeding too much from frais and jarred puddings which is why i thought mixing the natural yoghurt in with fresh fruit would be better.

Any advice/ideas would be most grateful.

Manf

The bacteria in live yogurt are beneficial and safe for people of all ages, Manfwood. Live yogurt is especially good for anyone who has just had a course of antibiotics, as it helps replenish the natural flora of the gut.
Get your ds to develop a taste for this young and it will always be a nutritious standby (unless he is allergic to dairy products, but I think you'd already know by now!) HTH

My little boy developed very runny nappies at around the time I gave him live bio yoghurt. He was about nine and a half months at the time. I stopped giving it to him and he then developed chickenpox, so that may have been the cause of the upset. However the memory of those seriously stinkly nappies have sent me back to sugar-filled fromage frais. I don't dare try him on the bio again!

Mine loved natural yoghurt, bio and otherwise. It was the only thing she'd eat after a particularly horrid tummy bug (at around 10 months) and I did check with HV that it was ok to feed it to her - they said it was one of the best things for her to have, which was great, since otherwise I'd have been totally stumped. Have to say though, like jolou, it caused some very yoghurty nappies. Not horribly objectionable smelly ones, but defn yoghurty - and loose! She was that teeny bit older though - dunno what the official line is on bio yogs and younger infants.

Manfwood, the only thing you don't want to do is get yogurt made with unpasteurized milk. Otherwise it should be fine. Mixing in fruit with natural yogurt (bio or otherwise) is the healthiest thing you can do! (Double check that the yogurt doesn't have thickeners or starch as even many of the "natural" ones do.) However if you get lazy (like me)...try the Yeo Valley yogurts. Don't bother with the "baby" ones as they are the same as the adult ones only twice the price. They don't have all the thickeners and artificial flavors most of the other yogurts have, although they do have added sugar.
