I've just tried it and know it will be too hot for DC. I haven't any creme fraiche or similar. Any ideas will be welcomed please.

Some people say add a potato and it will remove some of the heat. Others say a halved lemon.

Perhaps you could try both!

Tanee58 · 16/05/2007 16:09

Have you any plain yogurt?

Otherwise, serve it with lots of plain mash to dilute his portion.

Twiglett · 16/05/2007 16:09

grated potato (or is that just for salt?)

or just loads of rice and add some more tomato puree

you could try them .. my 2 constantly surprise me at how hot they can take curries and chilli (6 and 3)

Tanee58 · 16/05/2007 16:09

I know the potato works for oversalting - haven't tried it for chilli.

ComeOVeneer · 16/05/2007 16:10

From google....

Too hot/Cooling Off! - if the chili's too hot for you, or you just need a little break from the heat, you can use ice cream, sherbet, or ice cold milk for immediate relief. I serve chili with giant frosted mugs of milk. Ahh!

Rosslyn Gallagher suggests sliced cucumber for this purpose. That does sound cool!

If you've made a batch of chili that's just too hot, and want to fix the whole thing, my readers have provided a few techniques (which I have not tested!) You can thicken the chili with flour and water (even if you have to add more liquid to the chili to have something to thicken), or you can make more chili of a mild type and mix with the original.

Pat Riley (on The Recipe Link BB) says:

If you get heavy handed with the chili powder in your Chili con Carne - dump in a can of crushed pineapple. It virtually disappears so no one knows that it is there, it leaves the flavor of the chili - but takes out the heat.

ComeOVeneer · 16/05/2007 16:11

Potato is for overly salted food.

bananabump · 16/05/2007 16:13

Sour cream or plain yoghurt are best for taking the heat out of chillis. All you could do otherwise is try add more mince/tomatoes/whatever veg you put in to dilute the chilli.

If nothing else just serve it with loads of plain rice and chilled glasses of milk to sooth burning mouths! Sliced cucumber on the side is good too.

Really? I didn't know that Cov.

TwirlyN · 16/05/2007 16:15

thanks all, sorry just nipped out to stir and taste. So no yougurt,(only lazy town fruit ones), oh which one to try, I have a lemon also flour and water, tom ketchup and puree. Ever felt confused before, which would you all go with, please?

TwirlyN · 16/05/2007 16:17

ledodgy · 16/05/2007 16:17

Lemon is supposed to work.

ComeOVeneer · 16/05/2007 16:18

We serve ours with mashed avocado as well to help with the heat.

TwirlyN · 16/05/2007 16:22

tin toms, tom puree and chocolate spread has been added. ??? I can't stop looking at the salad cream in the fridge though, is almost like it's saying me,me,me i'll do the job. This could get out of hand. So lemon or lemon juice next?

OP posts:
bananabump · 16/05/2007 16:23

stop, woman, stop!!! lol

Chocolate spread????

Just taste it and see if it's any better. Don't add salad cream or flour! Better a hot chilli than a bowl of miscellaneous slop!

TwirlyN · 16/05/2007 16:35

Actually it tastes really yum, it was only a tsp or so of choc spread. TBH i think it was a combo of the extra tin toms and puree that sorted it. There is still a little fire in there which will be fine for DC. Thanks everyone.

In South America they add plain chocolate - I've tried that - a square or two of really good 70% cocoa solids works well - a guy at work uses a teaspoon of cocoa powder.

Tanee58 · 16/05/2007 16:45

At this point I'd hold the salad cream 1
