organic - what do you buy, if anything?

thought this was interesting in the paper the other day - double page spread on the whole environment, saving the world sort of thing, but it gave a list of foods that if you can't afford to switch everything, you might consider these ones
flour
potatoes
bread
apple
pears
grapes
strawbs
green beans
tomatoes
cukes

we've been getting a box from abel and cole for a few months now and I used to think bunch of nonsense, but in terms of taste, I would always buy organic carrots now, and broc and pears.
any thoughts?

Eggs and meat we always go for organic. We try to mostly with dairy produce too but sometimes there isn't the choice.
Vegetables and fruit - sometimes, sometimes not.

But they obviously don't work, Fio!!

LazyLine · 16/05/2007 17:04

Eggs
Milk
Frozen Sweetcorn (it tastes AMAZING)

I won't eat meat that is non-organic.

LoveAngel · 18/05/2007 09:38

I must admit I don't buy organic fruit and veg simply because it is so extortionately expensive. The only organic foods I buy at the moment are milk and meat/poultry, mainly because they taste so much better. I'd like to be able to afford to buy only organic foods but the prices are a
p!sstake!

WideWebWitch · 18/05/2007 11:42

I buy organic almost everything.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 18/05/2007 12:07

Organic milk and dairy generally
Fruit and veg (always carrots - they taste so much better)where I can - especially the soft skinned variety and, for a reason I can't remember, always tomatoes (I think it had something to do with genetic modification)
Fresh soups (delicious)
Eggs - always free range and organic
I'd like to buy more organic meat, but it's hard to come by around these 'ere parts. I think maybe the locals resent being reminded that meat was once a living critter and prefer the re-constituted 'can you guess what it is yet' variety, preferably coated in batter (or baked in a pie!)

Funnily enough, I seem to be more concerned with seeing my DDs eat organically rather than myself. I think as they grow I would rather know what was going into them.

Would only ever buy Fairtrade tea, coffee and chocolate. If it's organic too, great. If not I'm not that bothered, so long as it is from a fairly traded/sustainable development source.

elclose · 18/05/2007 12:21

grumpy what fresh soup do you buy?
i buy all diary most fruit and veg, eggs, bread, most meat

Hulababy · 18/05/2007 12:24

PandaG - one near Rivelin. Is that organic? I keep meaning to ask him if free range, organic, etc. The farmer there is lovely.

Hulababy · 18/05/2007 12:24

Does noone else find that organic milk tastes odd?

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 18/05/2007 12:30

Duchy Originals are yum, especially the beetroot and dill one. (Droooool)
Also the mushroom into which I splash a soupcon of marsala (does that negate all the goodness?)

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 18/05/2007 12:33

D'you know, Hula, I think it's that organic milk tastes like, well, milk! Our palates have got so used to the taste of milky coloured water instead of proper old 'cows eating grass and not protein-based pellets' type of milk that we have forgotten that it should have some flavour.

Hulababy · 18/05/2007 12:35

I just know it tastes different. I don't like milk anyway and only use it, for myself, in things - drinks, desserts, etc. But organic milk makes my tea taste funny. I just couldn't get along with it at all and have reverted back to non-organic from the milkman.

PandaG · 18/05/2007 12:38

Coppice House Farm Shop you mean? That is on Rivelin Valley Rd - is where I go.

AFAIK the veg tghey sell is not organic, but the eggs are free range, and the meat is not certified organic as there is 1 thing they do which means they can't get certification, but it near as dammnit is organic, iyswim.

I really like the meat from there, and am trying to persuade school to buy the burgers there for the school bbq, not from the freezer in Tesco!

LadyTophamHatt · 18/05/2007 12:39

just milk.

ArcticRoll · 18/05/2007 12:44

Eggs
Milk
Chicken
Pork
Carrots
I remember reading that if you're not buying organic meat it is best to buy lamb as it can't be intensively farmed whereas non-organic chicken and pork is to be avoided.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 18/05/2007 12:44

I do know what you mean, Hula. I love cream, but don't do creamy milk, especially in tea. I think that organic milk does taste a bit more creamy (DDs love it, though)
I see from your profile that you are in Sheffield. I have recently moved half an hour from Sheffield, but haven't spent much time there yet. Have been to Murderhall/Meadowhell whatever you want to call it, but found the roads a bit too confusing to venture into the city. Any recommendations? (Advance apologies for hijack!)

PandaG · 18/05/2007 12:47

GOH - drive to Meadowhell, and then tram into the city if you don't fancy driving into it.

Come and join us at the Spa in September - we are a friendly bunch

we do sometimes have daytime meets too - picnic in the park type thing if you fancy it.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 18/05/2007 12:51

Ooooh. Vat is zis spa of vich you speak?

Hulababy · 18/05/2007 12:51

Thanks PandaG. The meat has been fantastic according to DH, and is such good value. Got a 4.5lb chicken for just over £5 last week and it was greta.

GOH - yes, been to Meadowhell many a times The roads are not actually that bad once you drive there. But it is just getting used to the one way system. Best bet is as PandaG says - drive to Meadowhall and then get the tram in, or use the park and ride on the parkway into Sheffield. I really like Sheffield city; has transformed itself int he time we have lived here.

The Sheffield spa where we do our meets is in the city centre and it is fab

Sheffield is a great city and there are lots of things to do in and around the place. And for eating/drining out it is great too.

PandaG · 18/05/2007 12:52

I'll bump the thread for you

Hulababy · 18/05/2007 12:52

This is the latest Spa meet thread. It is Spa 1877 (they have a website) adnd it is in the city centre. 3 hours of relaxation and hot chocolates for just £23!

Blackduck · 18/05/2007 13:04
