Does anyone have any advice? I do like meat but I'd like to cut it out of my diet.

Just buy quorn instead

Graphista · 14/04/2018 01:09

What exactly are you wanting advice on? Shops are full of vegetarian food inc meat substitutes and loads of recipes online. It's really easy now.

I've been veggie almost 30 years was much harder then.

So if you like it then why is it you want to cut it out? Is it because you have ethical/environment concerns or is it more because you feel you "should"?
If the former then why not try reducing your consumption of meat (and when you do buy it buy the best you can afford) and experimenting with alternatives like tofu, Quorn, pulses, seitan, tempeh etc - but do make sure you take a B12 supplement - Anna Jones has some great recipes
If it's more that you think you "should" then maybe spend some time thinking about where that pressure is coming from
Ultimately though it's your choice and what with the rise in people reducing meat there have never been more options out there if you decide you do want to cut it out of your diet
Good luck!

Hi. I have concerns about animal welfare after walking past a 'fishing farm' and also have been concerned about the treatment of battery hens for sometime. It just seems extreme to say I'm cutting it out all of our lives immediately and wondered if anyone had any advice on 'starting out' as a veggie if you like x

Hi
Have a look at the following on u tube:
Happy Pear - two Irish twins - plant based cooks [ almost vegan]-
Bosh - easy lovely recipes
Deliciously Ella - very easy recipes to start with
Rose Elliot - cheap easy vegetarian food

Look at the Vegan / Vegetarian Society websites.

Go to some good vegetarian restaurants to get ideas.

I started only eating organic free range meat, then cut out white meat and then fish. Now I will only eat free range organic eggs and Im drastically cutting down on milk and cheese [ I only have organic free range]

You could start one day a week and gradually build up.

I started beginning a vegetarian as I loved my dog and cats and learnt that a pig is as intelligent as a dog but were beginning chained in spaces they could hardly moved in and basically tortured. If a dog was treated like that the person would be prosecuted.

Despite saying the above I try never to lecture people who eat meat - especially as people who l love dearly eat meat - but will explain if people ask

Hi OP
I am a vegetarian and am very happy to be one.
You are definitely making the right choice. If you go into the animal welfare sites like Animal Aid,PETA,etc, they have lots of suggestions and free guide packs.
There are many delicious recipes and new foods to try so it is good fun and the range is growing all the time.
Quorn mince makes a fantastic Sheppard pie.
Will do make lovely chocolate vegan ice cream too.
If you feel you cannot go vegetarian straight away, look at Compassion In World Farming for suggestions in organic food.
Holland and Barrett sell vegetarian vitamins .
A vegetarian diet is healthy, cost conscious and cruelty free!
If you wanted to carry the cruelty free through to other areas of life,ASTONISH cleaning products are not tested on animals and many own brand cosmetics are animal friendly, you can download an app which scans barcodes in the shop to tell you if it's animal friendly.
Good luck!🌼🐑

@tvhearts a pleasure
If it doesn't feel right saying it then don't - you need to label or explain how you eat - just start experimenting - for example you could try Meat Free Monday and then just go from there, gradually increasing the number of meat free dishes you have and, when you do have meat, having smaller portions and making sure it's really good quality (i.e. free range and has the freedom food logo)
There are lots of places mentioned above where you can look for recipes but also have a look at www.bbcgoodfood.com for other ones and just take it slowly - you don't need to go completely veggie overnight - and equally if you decide that being completely meat/animal product free isn't right for you then that's fine too - don't put so much pressure on yourself ;)

Hi OP. I’m a little like you. I’ve always loved meat (and still do) but recently have been troubled by the sense that humans are not treating animals in the way that we should. And it’s not all meat that’s the problem, it’s cheap meat.

For the past month I’ve been eating meat about twice a week. And previously I’ve been someone who doesn’t consider a meal a proper meal unless it contained meat!

Now when I buy meat I make sure it’s free range or organic. When I see cheap meat on sale I can picture the suffering animal in my mind. When I buy better welfare meat I have a little mental image of a happy pig rolling in the mud outdoors Smile I don’t mean to vilify others; this is just what helps to keep me on track.

Plant-based foods are healthy and filling, and I’m someone who likes to feel stuffed after a meal, so eating veggie is also quite good for my waistline...
