Sprinkles cake

DD tried to make a cake like this one yesterday.

Basically just a bog standard sponge with sprinkles baked in. Cake tastes great, but the sprinkles have totally disappeared during baking, probably because they are pure sugar. The recipe is not clear about what sprinkles to use. Any ideas?

Yes you need the American style sprinkles that are big and bright. Dobbies cooking section has them.

That was the effect we were going for - the little splodges of colours through the cake. We actually have some red and clue sprinkles which we bought in the states last year (although just cheap Walmart ones) so might try with those and see what happens.

Even if it doesn't work the cake tastes fine as the UK sprinkles are just sugar.

It's because the UK sprinkles all have natural colours, which are not that strong and sort of disappear as you discovered. You need the sprinkles with E numbers in them, the really brightly coloured ones (I'm sure uk ones used to be like that when I was younger!!)
