Baking times two smaller cakes instead of one big?

I’m about to make a choc fudge cake, good housekeeping recipe. I have all ingredients, but just realised it’s supposed to be one big (deep) cake, baked for 1hr 45mins at 160, then sliced in the middle before sandwiching with the choc fudge.

I’ve only got two standard depth cake tins. Any idea how much I would reduce the cooking time by?? Similar recipes that cook two instead of one deep one cook for between 30-40 mins, but this is much less time and I’m clueless. Help anybody?

When i cook shallow c akes they tend to take about 30 mins - i would check them at 25 mins to see how brown they are and just press the top gently with 2 fingers - if cooked it should gently spring back, if it needs anither five mins it wont spring back. Good luck.

Great thanks so much, I’ll go with that!! I normally do simpler sponge recipes, but it’s a birthday cake and I thought I’d prepped for everything yesterday, bar the tin obviously

If you are putting the two tins on different shelves in the oven I would,swap them over half way through cooking too.

Thanks, luckily they both fit on the same, but I’ve swapped them round after 30 incase the heat distributes differently (not the best oven!) anxiously checking every ten mins now but skewer is still gooey!

Just praying I haven’t over cooked. They went from a very sticky not boiling skewer, to clean skewer in five mins, so waiting for them to cool now. Off out for Italian at 530, so it will be 7pm before we light the candles!
