Are Humzingers bad for my children?

lyrabelacqua · 08/05/2007 00:05

I keep reading about 'fruit sticks' being bad for children. does that mean Humzingers? My two eat them and really enjoy them and i thought they were healthy because they're 100% fruit. i know the sugar concentration is high but surely they're better than, for example, Haribo sweets?

no not bad at all

Whoooosh · 08/05/2007 15:55

I give them to dd but would rather she had concentrated fruit sugar in a portion controlled way than some of the other crap I could feed her.

I have compared the ingrediants list to things like fruit roll ups and they are much better.

oliveoil · 08/05/2007 15:56

mine love them

they think they are sweets, bless

PedroPony · 08/05/2007 15:56

they are unfeasibly horrid

McDreamy · 08/05/2007 15:56

what are humzingers? I live in Cyprus so really out of touch!!!

MegaLegs · 08/05/2007 15:57

Is it a combination of sugar and fruit acid that might make them bad? Didn't know they were bad to be honest, my lot love them too.

MegaLegs · 08/05/2007 15:58

They are dried fruit bars.

munz · 08/05/2007 15:58

I thought they were naturla suger so ok?

oliveoil - I know what u mean, as kids we had a crisp draw or a buscuit box, J has a snack box which is full I kid you not of dried fruit! the humzingers/little packs of fruit/rasins that humzingers also do - he really likes those cos they have differnt bits as well as the rasins.

thelittleElf · 08/05/2007 15:59

I would say it's better than giving them a bag of choc buttons..although i know which one i would rather have

MegaLegs · 08/05/2007 15:59

Probably a teeth thing.

MrsBadger · 08/05/2007 16:00

still sugar even though it's natural

I'd rather have an apple and a packet of buttons tbh

DontCallMeBaby · 08/05/2007 16:03

But on the negative side for Humzingers - natural sugar is still bad for teeth, and they are immensely sticky, plus they contain sulphur dioxide which can be dodgy for asthmatic kids, I think. But they are mostly fruit and a bit of a change from raisins, and more child-friendly than dried apricots, at least for some. But DD has long since discovered chocolate buttons and their ilk and not looked back.

themaskedposter · 08/05/2007 16:03

dd doesnt like them

don't blame her tbh

she eats real fruit tho

suejonez · 08/05/2007 16:08

they're basically just dried fruit aren;t they so Ok to give as often as you'd give ried fruit (ie more often than chocolate, less often than fresh fruit). They ahev the advantage that you can bung a few in your handbag and forget about them, apples aren;t quite so handbag friendly...

Whoooosh · 08/05/2007 16:10

DD is violently intolerant of dried apricots and bored to death of raisins.Lazy little minx won't eat an apple but boy would she polish off the choc buttons.

Totally agree with Suejonez view.

suejonez · 08/05/2007 16:13

"Totally agree with Suejonez view" - I think that may be a first for me

NotanOtter · 08/05/2007 16:14

yum......ds will NOT on;y have one

mumfor1standfinaltime · 08/05/2007 16:16

Have just discovered humzingers and ds loves them. He won't eat much fruit or veg so I think it's a good way to get some goodness into him. Agree also that they are great to keep in your bag for journeys or out and about.
I used to buy 'school bars' too which are similar, but only more expensive.

Why is it on mumsnet that anything that is trying to make kids eat more healthy is basically made to 'look bad'??

suejonez · 08/05/2007 16:21

the only problem with them is that my mum pinches them for herself.

princessmel · 08/05/2007 16:23

They're great. My 2 love them.

PeachyChocolateEClair · 08/05/2007 16:23

School bars are a bit as they ahve sugar etc added, but humzingers are great (although mine ahte them so I give school bars, but they think they're a treat and eat fruit as well so they're conned ha ha ha)

there's a tendency on MN to not like anything with sugar- rasins and juice used to be a common one I haven't seen for a bit- the reality is that kids need a balanced diet and humzingers are a good aprt of that.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 08/05/2007 16:27

Agree that these things can contain sugars and even 'natural' sugar in an apple is bad for teeth. But surely it is better to have fruit than chocolate or even crisps (saturated fat?).

(must admit I have tried humzingers and they are yum! Dh won't eat any fruit or veg so trying to get him to eat them too)

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2007 16:28

Very sticky and mould to your teeth fearfully I think

ds hasn't had these but is obsessed with something called 'fruit leather'

I don't think they are any good for teeth at all

americantrish · 08/05/2007 16:31

i would think the only thing bad about them is that they stick to the teeth much like raisins would.
anytime i give ds something like that is shortly before his nap and bedtime since teeth will be brushed then.
(but yes, i think they are better than giving something full of refined sugar and artificial colours!)

tygrynio71 · 03/02/2015 13:37

Ladies

this snack is partially healthy as it has sulphate dioxide as preservative, yes some bad stuff indeed. in the healthy snacks thee is loads of preservatives just like yogurts, start reading labels. sine when good natural yogurt need preservative?

you have to be EXTREMELY careful with the amount of sulphur dioxide in other prepackaged foods. healthyeating.sfgate.com/health-risks-sulfur-dioxide-dried-fruits-3921.html

read more , be more aware of what children are given
