Good cereal substitutions for Nestle ones?

Ds loves his cheerios and shreddies.... I'm aware that a lot of own-brand ones contain high amounts of sugar. We mostly shop at Tescos?

My dd2 is a bit particular about her breakfast cereals, but she has just graduated onto Sultana Bran which she loves. I like Cranberry Wheats.

purplemonkeydishwasher · 05/05/2007 21:09

so glad you started this! I've been thinking about starting the same thread. I love cheerios but want to give up Nestle products. everything is either a) gross or b) grossly overpriced!

BonyM · 05/05/2007 21:10

I've recently bought Tesco own brand shreddies (Malted Wheats I think they're called). Tbh, not sure if they're higher in sugar than the originals.

BonyM · 05/05/2007 21:11

Oh, and dd2 likes Wheetabix Princess Stars which aren't as high in sugar as a lot of similar type cereals (although still more than I would like).

lunavix · 05/05/2007 21:18

hmm.

sultana bran?

He loves weetabix but he can't just eat that lol. And dd is a blw baby so it needs to be something she can feed herself!

BonyM - I really don't like the look of those... strawberry and caramel flavour??? Yeuch.

DD loves rice krispies and porridge, not together.

tassis · 05/05/2007 21:25

we do weetabix and tescos versions of both cheerios and shreddies

LIZS · 05/05/2007 21:35

Are you trying to avoid Nestle speciifcally , only they make some own brand cereals.

peggotty · 05/05/2007 21:35

What's the prob with Nestle, have seen them mentioned on another thread in slightly disparaging way - is there something we should know about them?

treacletart · 05/05/2007 21:41

Baby Milk Action

NotQuiteCockney · 05/05/2007 21:45

Kallo make a really nice puffed rice cereal, no added sugar. We otherwise buy a lot of Whole Earth cereals - their corn flakes, Swiss muesli, and multigrain flakes (which are a bit sugary, imo) are all v popular in our house.

peggotty · 05/05/2007 21:45

ah, i see.

PigeonPie · 05/05/2007 21:55

DH complained when I bought Tesco / Sainsbury own shreddies - said they tasted like fluffy cardboard - so I'd like to know of a reasonable substitute too.

NotanOtter · 05/05/2007 21:55

cheerios are hideaously high in sugar

FrannyandZooey · 05/05/2007 21:58

Make your own from oats and fruit

or use cooked grains (rice etc) with milk to taste and sweetened with banana, raisins, cinnamon or vanilla extract

islandofsodor · 07/05/2007 23:00

United Cereal Partnerships make a lot of own brands and they are owned by, you guessed it, Nestle. Saying that I do buy Asda own brand because I have to buy something and ds refuses to eat weetabix or porridge. Dd adores porridge strange girl.

They both do like the Weetabix multigrain thingies but they are a lot more expensive than Asda's own brand version.

TooTicky · 07/05/2007 23:11

My children love (organic, Doves Farm) cornflakes with raisins added. They also love porridge. There are some more ethical/organic children's cereals about (Doves Farm/EnviroKidz) but I'm not sure how the sugar levels compare.

AitchTwoOh · 07/05/2007 23:19

m&s do mini shredded wheat type things that are good and are not made by nestle.

SMSDidntMeanToOffendDido · 07/05/2007 23:29

As far as the sugar/salt content of cereals is concenred check out teh which report .

It is surprising how many own brands are better 'healthwise' than hte brand names - especially 'economy varieties.

Unfortunately the table does not consider taste.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 07/05/2007 23:30

Big sack of Quaker oats is what you need.

Or, the Goodness Direct website is always worth a look. We used them for bulk-buying allergy-free foods and the range of healthy stuff is excellent.

Anything but Nestle - DD1 (aged 5yo) has started lecturing her classmates not to buy KitKats

WendyWeber · 07/05/2007 23:32

My DSs love Shreddies and really dislike the own brand varieties, to the extent that they actually refuse to eat them (I even tried switching the packets between the boxes and failed miserably )

ceolas · 07/05/2007 23:33

I mourn Shredded Wheat Fruitful

dinny · 07/05/2007 23:43

why, don't they make them?

Blu · 07/05/2007 23:50

Quaker Oat Crispies - the ones that used to be called Oat Crunchies - little square pillows.

I love them!
