Pot noodles
Ready meals
Things on toast
Grilled things (not sure what the grilling machine will do) + salad
Grilled things + microwaved veg
Takeaways
Do you also have a barbecue? If so, then barbecued things if weather nice.

But I'm sure you will be fed up with all these suggestions after about a week!

A friend of mine lived with just a microwave for over a year. SHe cooked spag bol last time I visited. You can do cassaroles [sp?] as well (on a low power setting I think).

Perhaps raid your recipe books for some inventive sald type dishes and other cold things. But if you can grill things, you could have grilled meat/chicken /fish with either salad or microwaved veg quite a bit. And things like microwaved baked potatoes, or fresh carton soup, heated in the micro.

I had to survive last year for about 8 weeks with no hob, although I did have my oven, and I found all sorts of things I could cook in the microwave.

The only thing I really couldn;t get the hang of was anything eggy, althogh my Mum manages to cook scrambled eggs OK in hers.

One of the things I used tod do quite succesfully was a microwave "stirfry" - chop up loads of veggies as you would for a stir fry, & bung them in a big bowl with a stir fry sauce, bought or home made if you prefer.

Also , casseroles / stews do work although you have to use a lot less liquid than you would if you were cooking them in the oven.

You can also cook pasta/ rice and leave it to sit in it's water while you heat through a pasta sauce or similar.

The main problem I founbd was you can only cook one thing at a time so you have to wrok out which thing to cook first and can leave to "rest" while you cook the rest!

It took some practise & experimentation, that's all

HTH

we had no kitchen or cooker for 5 months last year, moved house, building work etc. used microwave and bbq. main things to try,

for veg, those frozen steam in the bag ones are good, take about 4mins.

casseroles cook well, cover with cling film and they'll cook quicker and not spit so much

potato gratin works well, slice the potatoes thinly, lie in a bowl, pour over some double cream, cover, takes about 10 mins.

grill or bbq some chicken or tuna steak, bbq some peppers, chop and add to cous cous (we lived on lots of cous cous, only needs boiling water)

you can get frozen, steam in the bag rice and pasta too

Could you borrow a slow cooker from someone ? Might broaden your horizons a bit!

J20BABY · 05/05/2007 22:02

I think i'll manage, haven't made many casseroles anyway, and don't know if my microwave has got heat settings.

we had salad for tea with jacket potato's, and i even bought a packet of micro chips, although i very rarely do chips anyway, prefer jackets
