my son (whos now six) has always been like this and he too is like a rake! when he has breakfast (porridge and toast , possible an egg as well) he moves straight on to thinking about lunch. when he was little we would arrive back from taking his brother to school and he would immediately ask for his lunch. i just cant keep him he has to go.

nailpolish · 03/05/2007 14:49

i am seriously worried

i dont know if its normal or not

OP posts:
pinkrangerstartstowaddle · 03/05/2007 14:55

how old? my ds is 4.6 and ALWAYS like this , he is normally asking for lunch by 10.00am and thats after 2 sclices of toast, apple and yog for breakfast!!

SherlockLGJ · 03/05/2007 14:57

Lately I am more acquainted with the back of DS's (6)head, he opens the fridge and says what can I have to eat ??

Don't know why he bothers, he is always directed towards the fruit bowl.

Porpoise · 03/05/2007 14:58

Weary sigh of recognition.
Me: Hi ds2, how was school?
DS2: Fine. Got anything to eat?
Me: Here.
90 seconds later...
DS2: Got anything to eat?

Jomist · 03/05/2007 14:59

I used to tell dcs they must have holes in their feet because they couldn't possibly be putting that much food in and not be sick. At 13 & 10, no sign of eating any less and both normal build, not overweight. Keep shopping!

nailpolish · 03/05/2007 15:04

pinkanger she is 4 and a half

OP posts:
nailpolish · 03/05/2007 15:07

so whats the best thing to do?

normally i offer fruit, but she cant eat apples all day long...

she does have lots though, will go in the fridge and munch a bag of grapes, but sometimes she wants bread and butter, crisps, biscuits, cereal, i have stopped having chocolate biscuits in the house for this very reason

i just run out of things to give her!

its the (whiney) "what can i have NOOOOWW?"

that grates on me

OP posts:
nailpolish · 03/05/2007 15:07

and do you sometimes think they eat cos they are bored?

OP posts:
Gobbledigook · 03/05/2007 15:12

Yes NP - all 3 of mine. ON the weekend or when they are off school (like today and tomorrow!!!) they just eat constantly and drives me nuts. Yesterday I bought a bag of about 8 apples, a bunch of bananas (about 7) and a big punnet of grapes and the whole lot is gone less than 24 hours later. THe loaf of bread I bought yesterday afternoon has about 4 slices left.

It's ridiculous. Ds1 is like a rake as well.

Gobbledigook · 03/05/2007 15:12

Oh and they've been through a box of breadsticks.

It costs mea fecking fortune as it's all organic too!

Jomist · 03/05/2007 15:13

I'm sure some eat out of boredom. I know if mine are fully occupied they don't come down looking for food. I take the 'this is what there is to eat inbetween meals i.e. fruit, and if you don't want it there's nothing else' approach. If they don't eat the fruit then I guess they weren't really hungry.

As for the whineing - don't react to it. She'll learn soon enough that whineing doesn't get a response. BTW, just because this worked with mine doesn't mean it will work with yours. Hope that's helpful

nailpolish · 03/05/2007 15:14

any ideas what sort of thing i could have in the house for them to eat? besides fruit and veg (dd1 is currently munching a red pepper like an apple...)

ive got
fruit
veg
dried fruit
crackers
pancakes

and i let them have crisps from time to time

any other ideas?

i dont want to be in the kitchen all day long, cooking, i mean stuff that can be to hand

OP posts:
Gobbledigook · 03/05/2007 15:14

NP, mine are 6, 4.5 and 2 and they are ALL the same.

I run out of things to give them too. sometimes I think 'stuff it' and give them a penguin or something.I can't think of any other healthy stuff to give them. THey eat loads of fruit, breadsticks, yoghurts and bread. What else is there???

nailpolish · 03/05/2007 15:15

yes! jomist, there is always a lull in the day, and thats where i think they are bored

OP posts:
nailpolish · 03/05/2007 15:16

oh god - yoghurts! i bulk buy the bloody things

OP posts:
Jomist · 03/05/2007 15:18

I'm just wondering why a list of foods to offer inbetween meals is needed. Wouldn't that be counter-productive?

nailpolish · 03/05/2007 15:19

i dont know what you mean

i cant just give them 3 meals a day cos it obviously isnt enough

i KNOW they are hungry MOST of the time because whatever i give them is eaten

there is the odd occasion where i think its cos they are bored, they whine but i ignore it

if the are really hungry they can helpt themselves to a cracker or apple or banana or whatever

nailpolish, my DS1 is like this too. And if there isn't a snack available, he gets really really cross and irritable. his dad is exactly the same. I just carry bananas everywhere I go now.

sometimes for breakfast he'll eat 2 bowls of porridge, and if it's a weekend, then DH will be cooking some sausages and egg, and he'll have a helping of that too. And he's skinny too.

think it's totally normal. Afterall, they are growing all the time (hopefully upwards, not outwards!! )

nailpolish · 03/05/2007 15:23

i suppose i could dino

they have HUGE breakfasts - 2 bowls of cereal, toast and a yoghurt

OP posts:
HenriettaHippo · 03/05/2007 15:23

tbh, I just thank my lucky stars he isn't a fussy eater!
