Lining cake tins

However careful I am this always happens.... (see photo)
Do I need to line the sides.... the recipes always say to look be the sides....
in this instance it doesn’t matter but there are some occasions where I don’t cover the cake in blue buttercream....

I buy cake tin liners in Sainsbury’s...part laziness. They line the whole tin. But if I don’t have any, I only line the base.

I always just grease the sides and line the base with a circle of grease proof paper.

I never line the sides. I have some reusable non stick liner from Lakeland that I have cut to fit the bottom of my most used tins - the tins are also non stick. If a tin is not non stick I grease or use cake release spray.

If it's a spring form tin I buy those ready cut liner things from poundland and butter the sides.
If it's not I line the sides, you have to arrange it carefully, I tend to do it in two sections but one layer. I stick it to the sides with butter.

I have a silicone-ish liner cut to size. Bought from Lidl for £3 (I think). Never line the sides.

You need to butter the base and sides of the tin before putting the greaseproof paper in and then pat it down all over so it sticks to the tin properly.

I line the sides by cutting small rectangular strips (3/4 inches or so) and overlapping them, after greasing the tin. Anything too long 'falls in' because it's not fitted to the curve, as you've experienced.

TwitterQueen makes a good point that's I forgot to mention - greasing the tin acts as 'glue' for the paper to stick to the sides.

Poundland do ake tin liners, they're great - no messing around and that make cakes look amazing (sort of tall and straight sided).

I grease, line base with 1” excess cut into strips to come up the side. Then I grease again to stick it down and then use a single strip of greaseproof slightly longer than the tin circumferenceto cover the base overlap and then lightly grease again just to make sure it’s stuck. Think that’s probably a very old fashioned method a-la-Mary Berry but it does work for even the stickiest of tin/cake combos. If I’ve got a good non stick tin then I usually just grease and line the base with a circle of baking parchment.

I do have one tin that doesn’t quite have straight sides though and that’s a nightmare to line. I usually end up not bothering and just hoping for the best that it will come out
