For years this was the menu in our house...minimal variation except maybe seasonal droping of the stew & mash for pie/new post.

Monday night
Home cooked (as in heated within the house) fish and chips or coated chicken and chips

Tuesday night
Sausage, chips and onion rings from the greasiest chippy in town - slurred in ketchup with a round of bread and buuter

Wednesday night
Pie, mash/new pots, tinned peas & gravy OR homecooked (properly) stew and dumplings & veg

Thurs night
Identical to Tuesday

Friday night
Fend for yourself - whatevers going - usually chips on the way home from town

Saturday night
Identical to Tues

Sunday
Stew & dumplings or pie (as for Weds).

Food critics bring it on....but remember I had no choice in what my parents chose to feed me.

I remember spring cabbage and lots of roast beef and mince. She was a catering manager though!

How old are you?

SlightlyMadSuperhero · 30/04/2007 22:18

30 now.

Needless to say my DC have significantly more homecooked food than I did

We used to have tins of condensed chicken soup heated up & poured over potatoes.

Also had home made soup that was mostly water.

There were 8 of us though so things had to stretch

Never ate out of the chippy, it was too expensive, but my mum used to buy the microwaveable burgers for a Saturday evening as it was mass night & she wouldn't cook

moondog · 30/04/2007 22:20

Doesn't sound too bad slightly.
At leastb it was real food not overprocessed shit. (See Lunchables ad above)

Hi SMSH, I'm the same age - ours was basic but had much more fruit and veg.Lots of frozen stuff and tins though. Does it worry you that you may have health probs when you're older or do you suffer from any now (if you don't mind me asking?)

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/04/2007 22:39

When my parents were going through a 'tight' spot, we would have egg and chips or sausage and mash day in day out for weeks.

I thought it was fantastic

SlightlyMadSuperhero · 30/04/2007 22:52

I am overweight (about 13stone at 5'2") and generally unfit. I dread to think what will happen inteh years to come...

Fish and chips from chippy 3 times a week every week for years. I am embaressed realy.

My friends dad used to burn her toast & spread it with sugar

she said that's her favourite memory from childhood!

Also, we used to get arctic roll as a treat on a Sunday, with angel delight.

Chips once a week on Friday, and one tin of peas or beans used to stretch between 8 kids & 2 parents!!

truthandjustice · 30/04/2007 23:08

how did you learn to cook? did you do it at school?
i agree with you..... do think it sounds uber unhealthy and stodgy greasy fare...

SlightlyMadSuperhero · 30/04/2007 23:21

DP is a chef...I learnt from him. Plus I used to cook the stews (learnt from a neighbour)

Don't be embarrassed SMSH, it certainly wasn't your fault and at least you've learnt a better way now. There are plenty overweight people who eat really well, though I agree it wasn't the best start, your organs will be benefitting now
