I use a Be-ro recipe and they always come out crap with really hard bottoms.

I make them plain too so dont need amounts for raisins etc.

if you flour the tin and cut them out reasonably thickly they are lovely and light (the flour on the bottom of the tin really keeps them fluffy) - don't cook them too long either ... will try to find my recipe after DS's bath

am just eating a fresh plain scone from M&S and they are the best.
If I could make them like that, I would be a happy woman.

that would be great, thanks TM.

8oz self raising
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
2oz butter
1/4 pt milk

10 -12 mins in oven at 230 degrees

My 11 year old does this one, so it should be foolproof!

Nbg · 30/04/2007 18:12

right noted down princess, thank you.

I'll do yours tonight and if TM posts hers, I'll do that tomorrow.

my recipe is the same as Princess CC - but cook for 7 - 10 mins (also warm the baking tray first and don't open the oven door) - roll the dough out to 3/4 inch thick - yum! Knead the dough quickly and try to handle it as little as possible

Taylormama · 30/04/2007 18:15

sorry not quite the same (need to put blardy glasses on )

8 ox plain flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 teaspoons baking powder
2 ox butter
1/4 pint milk (for glazing as well)
no egg in the milk mixture

Let us know the winner in the great scone bake off LOL!!

Ok have just made a batch.
In the end I had to do a mix of both recipes because I had no plain flour

so I did
8oz self raising
2oz butter
2 heaped tsp baking powder
sprinkle of salt
1/4 pint milk

cooked for 13 mins just over 200.

They've come out brill but they're not sweet enough
So I can only think that I need to add sugar next time.

tablespoon of sugar added to the mixture will help and a load of clotted cream and strawberry jam
