" Typical French picnic food includes basic baguettes along with whole meal breads, rich assortment of cheeses, charcuterie (cooked meats including sausages from the Alps flavored with everything from anise to morel mushrooms), pink hams and farmhouse pates. "

apparently

JackieNo · 30/04/2007 16:05

Cappuccino - I think you missed out a emoticon there.

PetronellaPinkPants · 30/04/2007 16:05

How about a pain surprise, kids love them

PetronellaPinkPants · 30/04/2007 16:07

(it is a hollowed out cylindrical loaf of bread filled with little sandwiches btw, with the top of the bread as a lid, you could buy a cottage loaf or something and try and make one or you can buy them in Paul and other good french bakers)

aDad · 30/04/2007 16:09

think langues de chat are quite easy to make. Google comes back with plenty.

if not can ask dp later - as she's trained in French patisserie, and i remember her making them.

What about tabbouleh? Couscous or bulgar wheat salad flavoured with mint. It's north african originally, but very common fare in France now.

'Compote de pommes' would be simple and healthy - it's just stewed apple liquidised.

www.marmiton.org is a fab French recipe site and they have recently translated a whole load of classic French recipes into English so you might find some ideas there.

Also, gougeres, which are cheesy choux pastry puffs or yoghurt cake which is very simple.

Just had a look and the English version of that Web site I mentioned is www.letscookfrench.com
