As a family we’ve decided to try to once a week do a country themed evening or breakfast with food. So far we’ve done the obvious of India, China and Mexico.
Next week DS has chosen from his kids map book, Canada

Any ideas for a traditional meal, pudding or breakfast?

Plus any other country/ideas he’s requested we do Something African, Jamaican, Thailand, Portuguese and Spain

Thanks in advance

For Portugal you have to have portugese custard tarts. They can be eaten for breakfast or dessert.
Canada, it’s all about the maple syrup! And people in Quebec love their Poutine.
For African dishes maybe a Moroccan tagine or try bobotie from South Africa.

For Jamaica you could do jerk chicken - or ackee and saltfish - with rice and "peas" (beans)

For Spain you have to do paella!

African: Moroccan tagine with Bulgar
Canadian: pancakes with bacon and maple syrup.
Thai: curry with jasmine rice, tom yum soup if the kids like a bit of spice
Spain: paella as PP suggested, or tapas dishes like patatas bravas, chorizo in red wine, prawns etc

Thank you, I think we are going to do pancakes, maple syrup and bacon and eggs for breakfast for Canada.

Jamaica next!

Portuguese you could also do Bacalão/(bacalhau) it's delicious, my kids love it. There's also a really simple salad called Salpicão that's technically Brazilian but it's really easy and yummy, with cream, chicken breasts, corn, grapes, carrots, peas, chives, parsley and salted crisps topping.

If you want to do something Korean, you could do beef bulgogi or bibimbap or barbecue ribs. They’re all easy and tasty. For the bulgogi, I just buy steak and slice it very thinly myself (because I’m too lazy to go to the butcher and choose to shop online instead).

Or for Japanese you could do oyakodon, which looks horrible but is lovely. Or gyudon. Or yakitoru chicken or teriyaki chicken (you could do beef instead if you preferred). Or chicken katsu curry (you can actually buy blocks of the curry sauce in the supermarket if you don’t want to make it). Or omurice.

Typo: should be yakitori chicken.

DS2 really loves khao moo daeng (Thai barbecue pork and rice).

khao moo daeng

Greek would be good to do with lots of delicious options.

UnimaginativeUsername · 04/02/2018 10:32

You could do Vietnamese. For example: pho, Bahn mi, summer rolls. Vietnamese barbecue pork is also nice.

For west African you could do jollof rice. Or Ghanaian red red with plantain.

UnimaginativeUsername · 04/02/2018 10:36

And for Canadian you should do poutine.

Mark Kurlansky did a cook book called "International Night" which wasessentially the same as what your doing.

It has loads of ideas & tested recipes from Tanzania and Kazakhstan to Cuba and Norway egg
