One of my New Years resolutions was to get very good at baking Grin. I am a good cook but haven't done much baking (aside from basic fairy cakes when the DD's were little), and I'm rubbish at cakes.
Please share your best tips/fool proof recipes with me...I have So far made some passable ginger bread...

Practice! And watch the Great British Bake Off - they often make common mistakes.
Mary Berry recipes are usually failsafe and straight forward, as are Delia Smith's. Some people just have a talent for baking too so I have two good friends,we all bake a lot. One friend just cannot seem to go wrong with cakes even if she's half asleep while baking, the other is very, very good and can follow even the most complicated recipe with success whereas my cakes depend on me sticking to my (few) tried and trusted recipes. I am not a natural but have learned over the years (and many lbs and £'s) what I can and cannot do.

The Avoca cookbook also has some good recipes.

Another vote for Mary Berry, I use her 'Simple Cakes' book often and although I have most of her books this is definitely my favourite. All the recipes are very simple. Generally just throw the ingredients in a bowl and mix with an electric hand mixer (ie Kenwood around £15). Agree with others a pair of digital scales is essential. YouTube is also a great source of information. Search Cupcake Jemma, her buttercream masterclass is excellent. Pair with Mary Berry's Victoria sandwich cake and strawberry jam 😋
