Breakfast cereals dilemma

Hi all,

I've been looking for breakfast cereals for kids that aren't full of sugar / other bad stuff - I know there are a couple of threads out there from a few years back but wanted to see if there were any updated suggestions

There's nothing I can see that my kids would necessarily jump at - don't like the idea of eating boring options like porridge or Shreddies, naturally they love Frosties and Coco Pops. I've seen AlphaBites by the same people who do Bear Snacks - has anyone tried them?

Any other recommendations would be really useful :) My kids love the idea of cereal - trying to find something they'll love the idea of eating but which isn't terrible for them

You could make your own muesli or honey granola, then at least you can control the sweetness levels?

I'll admit we're sugary cereal eaters in this house.

That's the first time I've heard nutella described as healthy!

Mine only have cereals in the holidays. Porridge only. Maybe grape nuts at a push. I think most branded cereals are crap.

nothing wrong with cereals.all of them as long as everything else is balanced.
but general rule for us has been having the lower sugar ones like shreddies and branflakes and cornflakes krispies and then others for treats days.
we loved cereal and looked forward to having a bowl after school too.i think they are fine as long as balance is held thoughout the rest of the diet.
ours loved cornflakes with allbrans layered on top and the mixture does taste nice and add that bit of fibre.
I regret the down pouring against cereals we have out there now.i don't think it was eve the cereal that was the problem it was just a get out for the government and other bodies to focus on.its got to be seen as diets as a whole that went down hill on all meals.
its always got to be a balance.

I like this - I know it’s got some golden syrup in it but it’s not bad otherwise:

We have bran flakes I have with milk and my lb had a little handful dry with his fruit in the morning we then have roast. He really likes bran flakes and for the tiny amount he has I'm not to worried about the sugar in them. He really doesn't like porridge and he hasnt tried any other cereals. My husband likes the little shredded wheat and weaterbix.

Scabbersley · 09/01/2018 18:38

There's no point in giving them loads of sugar first thing in the morning. No fibre, a third of it is sugar. What a waste of a meal can't possibly fill them up.

DD got unicorn fruit loops for Christmas and couldn't even finish one bowl.
We currently have malted wheats (own brand shreddies), mini shredded wheats, fruit & fiber, porridge and frosties. They hardly ever have the frosties though.

Oats
Shredded wheat
Weetabix
Bran flakes

I'm in my thirties. I'm not too old for Unicorn Fruit Loops right? RIGHT?

Bringmewineandcake · 09/01/2018 19:16

Hell no, Koalas!
Also old enough to deal with the disappointment Grin

My kids only have cornflakes.

Was staying over at a cousins and she have them 'cornflakes' which they didn't like the taste of. I was wondering why and then I checked what it was she had given them and it was Frosties, was glad they didn't like them as they r full of sugar.
Really don't understand all these cereals full of chocolate and sugar that kids must have. They should be banned.

Unicorn Fruit Loops

We got them in Sainsbury’s. A five year old’s dream breakfast.

Butteredparsn1ps · 10/01/2018 07:52

I've just checked the content of Rice Crispes. 10g sugar per 100g. So 3g for a 30g bowl. Less than half a teaspoon.

Not a health food, but not the apocalypse either.

Haha and glittery saltysea. Can't believe they exist! At least they aren't unicorn poo or something!

Scabbersley · 10/01/2018 08:07

I've never known anyone to eat rice krisoies without covering them with sugar

UnitedKungdom · 10/01/2018 08:08

Mine eat rice Krispies with no sugar. If you don't start it they don't look for it.

Scabbersley · 10/01/2018 08:10

Then that is fine bows

ApacheEchidna · 10/01/2018 08:19

My dc love the various fruity versions of mini-shredded-wheat that most supermarkets do own-brand. Raspberry, blueberry, apricot etc.

We do occasionally have coco pops, multi grain hoops etc in the house but they are only allowed to be used as a little sprinkling on top of something healthier.

We won't buy any cereal or other product made by Nestlé due to their unethical marketing of baby milk which continues despite international condemnation, and more recently their efforts to legally deprive communities of all access to drinking water.

Weedsnseeds1 · 11/01/2018 13:23

Hate to tell you but most supermarket mini shredded are made by cereal partners who are jointly owned by Nestlé....

FluffyWuffy100 · 11/01/2018 13:28

Drizzle a bit of honey too.

Mine just put a bit of sugar (half a teaspoon) on weetabix or shreddies

Why choose a low sugar cereal if you put on honey or sugar?!?

missyB1 · 11/01/2018 13:39

Ds has been having porridge with half a teaspoon of golden syrup and a handful of blueberries. He also likes raisin wheats.
